{"id":8262,"date":"2022-07-17T11:30:38","date_gmt":"2022-07-17T15:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=8262"},"modified":"2022-07-17T11:30:39","modified_gmt":"2022-07-17T15:30:39","slug":"16th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-c-homily-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/16th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-c-homily-2\/","title":{"rendered":"16th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/071722.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">16<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C<\/a><br>Genesis 18:1-10a<br>Psalm 15:2-3, 3-4, 5 (1a)<br>Colossians 1:24-28<br>Luke 10:38-42<br>July 17, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Abraham loved the Lord.&nbsp; Today we hear of a time when \u201ct<em>he LORD appeared to Abraham<\/em>\u201d but Abraham did not know it was the Lord.&nbsp; Instead, \u201c<em>Abraham saw three men.<\/em>\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">What was Abraham\u2019s response?&nbsp; As a man who loved the Lord, he also loved the people and offered hospitality to all who came near.&nbsp; This was the expectation but it was more than a duty to Abraham.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">When he saw the three men, Abraham \u201c<em>ran<\/em>\u201d to greet them and showed respect to them as he bowed.&nbsp; He offered his hospitality with water and food.&nbsp; The food?&nbsp; It wasn\u2019t second pickings.&nbsp; He \u201c<em>picked out a tender, choice steer<\/em>\u201d for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Abraham did not do this simply as a duty.&nbsp; He did it with faith.&nbsp; His hospitality did not go unnoticed when one of the men told Abraham that within a year he would have a son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Hospitality was important in Abraham\u2019s time and it remained important in Jesus\u2019 time on Earth.&nbsp; Martha welcomed Jesus with her hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Martha wanted to provide for Jesus.&nbsp; Mary, on the other hand, did not help with the serving.&nbsp; Instead, she sat at the feet of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">This upsets Martha.&nbsp; Why isn\u2019t Mary helping her?&nbsp; They need to offer hospitality to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Martha felt burdened.&nbsp; She went to Jesus to ask him to tell Mary to help her.&nbsp; Martha may have been stunned when Jesus tells her that Mary has \u201c<em>chosen the better part.<\/em>\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Is hospitality important?&nbsp; For \u201c<em>He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.<\/em>\u201d&nbsp; It is just to feed the hungry.&nbsp; Hospitality includes food but it also includes being present to the person.&nbsp; Looking beyond basic hospitality, today\u2019s psalm speaks of justice as keeping the truth in our heart, not slandering, or harming, and providing with charity (not charging interest) to those in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Martha was right to be considered about hospitality.&nbsp; Perhaps she just took it legalistic.&nbsp; Jesus was in her house!&nbsp; She should spend some time with him.&nbsp; Do you spend time with your guests or do you feed them and send them on their way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">What had Jesus said to Martha?&nbsp; <em>\u201cMartha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.<\/em>\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Are you anxious?&nbsp; What do you worry about?&nbsp; Do you try to fix everything?&nbsp; Do we feel like we have too much to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The Lord wants us to be concerned about others but not at the expense of having peace in our hearts.&nbsp; When we feel like we have too much to do, we are to give it to the Lord.
