{"id":826,"date":"2012-09-26T16:51:52","date_gmt":"2012-09-26T20:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=826"},"modified":"2012-09-26T16:52:17","modified_gmt":"2012-09-26T20:52:17","slug":"changing-bishops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/changing-bishops\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing Bishops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you live in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dor.org\" target=\"_blank\">Diocese of Rochester<\/a> in New York State, you probably have heard that Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation for retirement of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dor.org\/index.cfm\/bishop-clark\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bishop Matthew Clark<\/a> and named <a href=\"http:\/\/syracusediocese.org\/about-the-diocese\/bishop-robert-j-cunningham\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bishop Robert J. Cunningham<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.syrdio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diocese of Syracuse<\/a> as our Apostolic Administrator (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dor.org\/index.cfm\/news\/news-docs\/bishop-robert-j-cunningham-appointed-apostolic-administrator\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a> to read more).<\/p>\n<p>As Apostolic Administrator, Bishop Cunningham is not <em>the <\/em>bishop of Rochester but he is in charge of it and will remain so until our new bishop is named.\u00a0 He also continues to be the Bishop of Syracuse.\u00a0 So, he is running two dioceses and so we certainly offer prayers for guidance and strength for him.<\/p>\n<p>There has been speculation by people for a while on who\u00a0will be the next Bishop of Rochester\u00a0(Bishop Clark turned 75 in July and thus required to submit his resignation for retirement).\u00a0 I will not enter into any speculation here because I have no idea who the next bishop will be.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t see any benefit in speculating.\u00a0 Instead, I simply pray that all involved in the selection process be guided by the Holy Spirit so that the new bishop be the person God has called to be the bishop.\u00a0 That is all I ask for in this matter.<\/p>\n<p>I can tell you a little about the selection process.\u00a0 Every few years and whenever a new list is needed, the bishops in a province are asked to submit names for consideration as bishop.\u00a0 (A province is a geographic region lead by an Archbishop.\u00a0 Our province happens to be the entire State of New York and is led by Cardinal Dolan.)<\/p>\n<p>To be named bishop, the person must be already ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic Church.\u00a0 Each bishop can ask priests, deacons, religious, or general parishioners to suggest priests\u00a0to be considered\u00a0but the process is entirely confidential.\u00a0 Then each bishop complies a list of those he wishes to nominate and shares it with the other bishops in the province.\u00a0 Then, the bishops of the province assemble one list of names that is sent to the Apostolic Nuncio in Washington, DC who is the Pope&#8217;s official representative in the United States.\u00a0 The Nuncio then researches the nominated priests and sends all the information to Rome for a decision.\u00a0 Ultimately, it is the Pope&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the average time for a new bishop to be named after a bishop submits his resignation is eight to fourteen months but there is not set amount of time.\u00a0 The appointment could come soon or it could be a while.<\/p>\n<p>Until the appointment is made, I am praying for all involved in the process and invite you to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
