{"id":815,"date":"2012-09-11T08:26:14","date_gmt":"2012-09-11T12:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=815"},"modified":"2012-09-11T08:26:14","modified_gmt":"2012-09-11T12:26:14","slug":"why-do-catholic-parishes-have-catholic-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/why-do-catholic-parishes-have-catholic-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Do Catholic Parishes Have Catholic Schools?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night we celebrated Mass for the beginning of the new school year followed by a dish-to-pass supper.\u00a0 As the new pastor, it was my privilege to preside and preach at this Eucharist.\u00a0 I would like to share my thoughts from the homily with you.\u00a0 I hope these words speak to you of why any Catholic parish would have a parish school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We gather today to mark a new beginning, specifically the beginning of a new school year.\u00a0 There are students here that are new, most especially the entire Pre-K3 group but they are not the only ones who are new.\u00a0 For these students, everything about Immaculate is new.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the rest of the students who have been here before, most things might be the same but there are changes.\u00a0 In addition to the new students there are new teachers &amp; aides.\u00a0 The returning students are in different classrooms and might have different schedules.<\/p>\n<p>We also have new faces in the business office.\u00a0 Lastly, we have a new pastor, namely me!<\/p>\n<p>So, I\u2019m sure that everyone here is experiencing something new.\u00a0 For people like me who don\u2019t like change, new things can be something of a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>But I also think it can be a source of new hope.\u00a0 Being an optimist, I like to see the changes as an opportunity for new hope, hope that Immaculate will become a better school because of these changes.<\/p>\n<p>So, as we begin this new school year, we should think about what it means to be a Catholic School.\u00a0 We send our children to school to learn math, science, writing, and history (among other subjects).\u00a0 This is knowledge and is taught in any school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a Catholic School, we do not limit ourselves to this academic subjects in the classroom.\u00a0 We work to develop not just the information in our children&#8217;s brains but to develop them as whole &#8220;persons&#8221;, mind, body, and spirit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So we also teach faith and values.\u00a0 What does it mean to be a good person.\u00a0 We teach our students to help each other.\u00a0 God calls us to care for each other.\u00a0 I saw that in our school opening day.\u00a0 When time came for Morning Prayer, I saw the older students go \u201cthe wrong way\u201d to the gym.\u00a0 I say the \u201cwrong way\u201d until I realized what they were doing.\u00a0 They went to the younger students\u2019 classroom and then walked with them to prayer, helping them.\u00a0 When I came this morning for prayer, I saw them do the same thing.\u00a0 Helping people is something we can do everyday.<\/p>\n<p>At this point in the homily I asked the students who teaches us right and wrong, good and bad.\u00a0 I thought they would say their parents and teachers but the first answer I got was Jesus.\u00a0 Of course, ultimately this is the right answer.\u00a0 Jesus teaches us through our teachers and parents but it is God who says what is right and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is what makes us a Catholic school.\u00a0 All of this is what we are about, making good people.\u00a0 I believe we have something special here.\u00a0 With hard work, I believe we can have the best school there is.<\/p>\n<p>Hard work by who?<br \/>\n* Students \u2013 you need to do the work the teachers ask of you so you can learn and become better people.<br \/>\n* Teachers, Miss Oravec,\u00a0Aides &amp; other staff \u2013 I ask you to put forth the effort to treat our children as special and help them become great people* *Parents \u2013 parents are the primary educators, children learn best when their parents are involved.\u00a0 Our school becomes better with your help<br \/>\n* Advisory Board<br \/>\n* And me!<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I need to do some hard work.\u00a0 I promise to do what I can to make this year a great year.\u00a0 I ask that you do the same.<\/p>\n<p>So, as we celebrate this Mass we pray for God&#8217;s blessing upon our school, our children, teachers, staff, principal, and parents to make this a great year.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
