{"id":575,"date":"2011-09-30T20:07:16","date_gmt":"2011-10-01T00:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=575"},"modified":"2011-09-30T20:07:16","modified_gmt":"2011-10-01T00:07:16","slug":"more-on-the-new-translations-of-the-third-roman-missal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/more-on-the-new-translations-of-the-third-roman-missal\/","title":{"rendered":"More on the New Translations of the Third Roman Missal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s my article on the new translations of the Roman Missal for October 2nd.<\/p>\n<p>Appreciating the New Translations<\/p>\n<p>After the opening prayer, we begin the Liturgy of the Word.\u00a0 Nothing is changing in the readings or the homily (except with your spirit).\u00a0 The next change will be in the Creed.\u00a0 The most visible is that we will be saying \u201cI\u201d instead of \u201cwe\u201d.\u00a0 In part, this is simply because the original text says \u201cI\u201d but also the general pattern at Mass is we use \u201cI\u201d when we confess our sins or our faith.\u00a0 Otherwise we use \u201cwe.\u201d\u00a0 Another change in the Creed is the reintroduction of the word \u201cconsubstantial\u201d in place of \u2018one in being\u2019 with the Father.\u00a0 Some might like to ask \u201cwhat does \u2018consubstantial\u2019 mean?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not a word we use in every day language.\u00a0 That is intentional.\u00a0 It expresses something very profound, the fact that the Father and Son (with the Holy Spirit) are three different people but intimately tied together as one God.\u00a0 In the early centuries of the church this was very difficult to express.\u00a0 At the Council of Nicea, the writers of the Creed knew they were trying to express something very profound and developed a new word to express it.\u00a0 So we use consubstantial to express that the Father and the Son are of the same \u201csubstance\u201d in total union with each other (and the Holy Spirit).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s my article on the new translations of the Roman Missal for October 2nd.
