\nWe do not have to proceed far into the Mass before we come to the first change in the new Translations.\u00a0 The priest leads us in the Sign of the Cross and then says one of three options, the first being \u201cThe grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.\u201d\u00a0 This form of greeting is found frequently in Paul\u2019s Letters.\u00a0 Just one word is changing in the new text.\u00a0 Fellowship<\/em> is changing to communion<\/em>.\u00a0 Fellowship can speak of people coming together to share.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t just about being \u201cfriends.\u201d\u00a0 The word communion<\/em> will be used to indicate the deeper relationship between the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit that we seek to be part of.\u00a0\u00a0 Next comes the response from the people \u201cAnd also with you.\u201d\u00a0 For our senior citizens, do you remember \u201cEt cum Spiritu?\u201d which translates as \u201cand with your spirit?\u201d\u00a0 Historical study shows that \u201cand with your spirit\u201d dates back to at least the fourth century.\u00a0 So this change is simply returning to what has been done for a long time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
