{"id":463,"date":"2011-04-05T17:29:41","date_gmt":"2011-04-05T21:29:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=463"},"modified":"2011-04-05T17:29:41","modified_gmt":"2011-04-05T21:29:41","slug":"using-words-to-describe-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/using-words-to-describe-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Using Words to Describe God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here I continue with a few more words one might use to describe God.\u00a0 For the rest of the series,\u00a0see <a href=\"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?category_name=images-of-god\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Images of God&#8221;<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Everlasting\/Eternal &#8211; These two words appear together on the list I am working from but I don&#8217;t see them quite the same when it comes to describing God.\u00a0 <em>Everlasting<\/em> tells us that God is without <em>end<\/em>.\u00a0 God certainly will never cease to exist but God is also without a beginning.\u00a0 God is without a beginning or an end.\u00a0 God is <em>eternal<\/em>.\u00a0 In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/revelation\/revelation21.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Revelation 21:6<\/a> we hear God say &#8220;I am the <em>alpha <\/em>and the <em>omega<\/em>, the beginning and the end.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0(Note <em>alpha<\/em> and <em>omega<\/em> are also on the list).\u00a0 The letter &#8220;alpha&#8221; is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and &#8220;omega&#8221; is the last.\u00a0 God existed before all else and is our creator.\u00a0 God will never cease to exist.\u00a0 God is eternal.<\/p>\n<p>Infant Jesus &#8211; We celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day when he emerged into\u00a0our human\u00a0world (having become human at his conception in Mary&#8217;s womb nine months before) as a little infant.\u00a0 I think it is a powerful image to imagine Jesus as a little baby but I have to admit it is not an image I think of often except at Christmas.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Simply because the physical image of Jesus that I normally think of is of him as a man in his thirties with a beard <em><strong>hanging on the Cross<\/strong><\/em>, crucified for our sins.\u00a0 I think of this image for two reasons.\u00a0 First, for Catholics, it is probably the image we most often see of Jesus.\u00a0 Secondly, because the image of the Cross is not an image of defeat and despair.\u00a0 It is an image of Jesus&#8217; perfect love for us.\u00a0 It is an image that leads to hope.<\/p>\n<p>Risen Jesus &#8211; The image of the infant Jesus symbolizes the beginning of earthly life.\u00a0 The image of the Risen Jesus is an image that shows us the eternal life that we all desire.\u00a0 The Risen Jesus appeared to the disciples so that they would understand; understand why the tomb was empty and to show us that we will all share in the Resurrection if we but follow his will.\u00a0 The Risen Jesus is an image of hope, hope that flows from knowing that life does not end in earthly death.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
