{"id":429,"date":"2011-02-17T18:27:12","date_gmt":"2011-02-17T23:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=429"},"modified":"2011-02-17T18:27:12","modified_gmt":"2011-02-17T23:27:12","slug":"jesus-gives-his-disciples-a-pop-quiz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/jesus-gives-his-disciples-a-pop-quiz\/","title":{"rendered":"Jesus Gives His Disciples a Pop Quiz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In today&#8217;s gospel (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/021711.shtml#gospel\" target=\"_blank\">Thursday, February 17, 2011 &#8211; Sixth Week in Ordinary Time<\/a>) Jesus\u00a0asks him disciples two questions.<\/p>\n<p>First, he asks them, &#8220;Who do people say that I am?&#8221;\u00a0 A nice beginning question, no pressure, simply asks factually what are other people saying.\u00a0 The disciples respond, \u201cJohn the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.\u201d\u00a0 Not bad.\u00a0 It indicates, at the very least, that the people are beginning to recognize Jesus as someone very special.\u00a0 They still have a lot to learn but perhaps a solid start.<\/p>\n<p>Then comes the next question, \u201cBut who do you say that I am?\u201d\u00a0 Jesus asks his disciples what they think.\u00a0 So far, he has been having to explain his parables to his disciples.\u00a0 Have they learned anything yet?<\/p>\n<p>Peter gives the response, &#8220;You are the Christ.&#8221;\u00a0 At last Peter has got it!\u00a0 Yes, Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the one they have been waiting for!\u00a0 Give Peter an &#8220;A&#8221; on the pop quiz.<\/p>\n<p>Then Jesus goes on to tell them what is to come; that he will suffer and be killed.\u00a0 Actually, he doesn&#8217;t say these things will happen to him.\u00a0 Rather he says it will happen to the Son of Man but Peter realizes Jesus is talking about himself.\u00a0 But then Peter blows it.\u00a0 He can&#8217;t understand why these things would ever happen to Jesus.\u00a0 Peter thinks none of these things would ever happen to Jesus as the Messiah.\u00a0 Peter&#8217;s lack of understanding may be reasonable.\u00a0 Why would one think the Messiah would be killed?\u00a0 They thought the coming Messiah would be a great political king so how could he be defeated.<\/p>\n<p>So, Peter responds by rebuking Jesus.\u00a0 Peter has just said Jesus is the Messiah and now Peter is telling Jesus how things should happen.\u00a0 Why would Peter think he could tell Jesus the way it should be?<\/p>\n<p>Seems ridiculous but we might ask ourselves are we any different?\u00a0 We believe in Jesus.\u00a0 Do we do things Jesus&#8217; way or do we do it our way?<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
