{"id":418,"date":"2011-02-01T18:04:15","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T23:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=418"},"modified":"2011-02-01T18:04:15","modified_gmt":"2011-02-01T23:04:15","slug":"blessed-are-they-who-hunger-and-thirst-for-righteousness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/blessed-are-they-who-hunger-and-thirst-for-righteousness\/","title":{"rendered":"Blessed Are They Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be satisfied.&#8221;\u00a0 These are words spoken by Jesus as he began his Sermon on the Mount.\u00a0 They are words we heard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/013011.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">this Sunday <\/a>in church.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Righteousness is to do God&#8217;s will, to do what is right and to stand up for what is right.\u00a0 We are a people of compassion, compassion like Jesus showed for us in his willingness to die for us on the Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, our diocese here in Rochester holds a Public Policy Weekend\u00a0the second weekend in February.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s issue is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dor.org\/index.cfm\/catholic-charities\/dioprograms\/working-out-of-poverty\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Working Out of Poverty.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0 Often, the petitions focus on a particular bill under consideration in our New York State Government or Congress.\u00a0 However, this year we take a different approach.\u00a0 Mindful of the budget crisis New York State faces and knowing there will be many budgets cuts this year, our petitions ask our elected state officials to be mindful of the needs of the working poor.\u00a0 Here are the exact words of the petition:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Working Out of Poverty:<\/strong><strong> Transportation and Child Care for Low-Income Workers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We understand that difficult decisions need to be made regarding the 2011-2012 New York State budget.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We, the undersigned, urge the Governor, the Assembly, and the Senate to give priority to programs that preserve and promote employment, with special attention to subsidies for child care and transportation for low-income workers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year we pay special attention to programs that help the working poor with child care and transportation expenses.\u00a0 We must be aware that some of these people are only able to work because of these programs.\u00a0 They may lose their jobs without the help.\u00a0 What would we gain by cutting these programs if it leads to more unemployment?<\/p>\n<p>Another area facing the budget ax is Medicaid.\u00a0 Last week, our New York State Catholic Conference (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyscatholic.org\" target=\"_blank\">www.nyscatholic.org<\/a>) issued a statement (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyscatholic.org\/pages\/news\/show_newsDetails.asp?id=526\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nyscatholic.org\/pages\/news\/show_newsDetails.asp?id=526<\/a>)\u00a0.\u00a0 Check it out and be mindful of those in need.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
