{"id":407,"date":"2011-01-14T18:50:34","date_gmt":"2011-01-14T23:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=407"},"modified":"2011-01-14T18:50:34","modified_gmt":"2011-01-14T23:50:34","slug":"doing-gods-will","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/doing-gods-will\/","title":{"rendered":"Doing God&#8217;s Will"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In today&#8217;s readings (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/011411.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">January 14, 2011<\/a>), we once again hear about those whose struggle to do God&#8217;s will.<\/p>\n<p>In the gospel, many people are coming to see Jesus and hear him preaching.\u00a0 A group comes with their friend who is a paralytic.\u00a0 Whatever they know about Jesus, they are clearly convinced he can heal the paralytic.\u00a0 Why else would they be willing to climb up on the roof of the house, carrying their friend, tear open the roof, and lower the paralytic down to Jesus?\u00a0 Clearly, they believe God&#8217;s power is at work in Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus takes the opportunity not just to heal the man but to turn it into a teaching moment.\u00a0 He does not say to the man, &#8220;Be healed.\u00a0&#8221; No, he says &#8220;Child, your sins are forgiven.&#8221;\u00a0 There are some scribes present and they immediately accuse Jesus of blasphemy.\u00a0 They believe that only God can forgive sins.\u00a0 What they fail to realize is who Jesus truly is.\u00a0 If they did, they would know that he does have the power to forgive sins.\u00a0 We must realize that the scribes do not <em>oppose<\/em> God&#8217;s Will.\u00a0 The problem is that they <em>do not know<\/em> God&#8217;s Will.\u00a0 They do not understand that Jesus is The Son of God.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the first reading from the <em>Letter to the Hebrews, <\/em>it quotes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/psalms\/psalm95.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Psalm 95:11<\/a>,\u00a0&#8220;<em>As I swore in my wrath, \u201cThey shall not enter into my rest.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/em>One might think of our eternal rest that we enjoy in Heaven.\u00a0\u00a0The Psalm is reflecting on the Exodus event.\u00a0 As they made their way into the desert from Egypt, the people failed to trust in the Lord when the food and water supply ran out.\u00a0 For their lack of trust, that generation was not allowed to enter into the promised land, hence never experienced <em>rest<\/em> in the promised land.<\/p>\n<p>We are called to follow God&#8217;s will.\u00a0 When we face struggles in our lives, we might wonder if it is God&#8217;s Will.\u00a0 We can wonder why God doesn&#8217;t eliminate our problems.\u00a0 Sometimes he does.\u00a0 Sometimes our struggles continue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, when things seem to be going hard, I ask myself why the struggle?\u00a0 Am I facing a struggle because I am not following God&#8217;s Will for me?\u00a0 Or are my struggles of human origin?\u00a0 If you read\u00a0 the prophets in the Old Testament, you will find that they faced many people who chose not to follow God&#8217;s Will.\u00a0 Through the opposition, the prophets endured in God&#8217;s Will.<\/p>\n<p>We are to pray for the wisdom and understanding to know if we are on the path God has laid out for us.\u00a0 How do we know if our struggles are because we aren&#8217;t following God&#8217;s Will or because of others&#8217; resistance to God&#8217;s Will?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One indication can be, when in the midst of the struggle, that we can find some <em>rest.<\/em>\u00a0 When I say &#8220;rest&#8221; I am not referring to physical rest.\u00a0 I am talking about rest in our soul, meaning God&#8217;s peace.\u00a0 Another way I look at it is to ask myself can I imagine myself doing anything else?\u00a0 Is my heart really in it?<\/p>\n<p>How do you know when you are doing God&#8217;s Will?<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
