{"id":364,"date":"2010-11-05T16:08:05","date_gmt":"2010-11-05T20:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=364"},"modified":"2010-11-05T16:11:59","modified_gmt":"2010-11-05T20:11:59","slug":"a-better-way-to-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/a-better-way-to-change\/","title":{"rendered":"A Better Way to Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While I am too young to have experienced the changes of the Second Vatican Council, from conversations with others, I am well aware of how the changes seemed to be rushed.\u00a0 People don&#8217;t like to hear about change.\u00a0 Beginning Advent of 2011 (a full year away!), we will begin using the new English translations of the Roman Missal.\u00a0 People are concerned about these changes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some people ask why the changes?\u00a0 What is wrong with the translations that we have been using for the last thirty years?\u00a0 It really isn&#8217;t a question of right or wrong but making sure our Mass is the best we have to offer.\u00a0 With the new translations, some of the scriptural references will become more obvious.\u00a0 For example, at Communion the people currently respond &#8220;Lord, I am not worthy to receive you but only say the word and I shall be healed.&#8221;\u00a0 This will become &#8220;Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.&#8221;\u00a0 I have to admit that the &#8220;roof&#8221; reference can seem strange when we are preparing to receive the Eucharist but it is a reference to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/matthew\/matthew8.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 8:8<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Others fear big changes that are rushed through.\u00a0 Let me tell you there is no effort to rush them in.\u00a0 To see the timeline of producing the current translation since 2000 check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/romanmissal\/resources-timeline.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/romanmissal\/resources-timeline.shtml<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the English translations have been approved there is still no effort to rush them into use.\u00a0 It is still almost\u00a0thirteen months away and we already had an informational session this week with our bishop here in Rochester.\u00a0 We will not simply hand out the new translations next fall and begin use.\u00a0 Between now and then, the diocese has a plan on preaching on the parts of the Mass to help everyone better understand the Mass and then to educate the people about the new translations.\u00a0 We are taking this very seriously to help everyone better understand and appreciate the Mass.\u00a0 My diocese is not alone is this.\u00a0 At the last Priests&#8217; Council of New York meeting, representatives from every diocese said their diocese is working on similar plans.<\/p>\n<p>For more on the new translations check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/romanmissal\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/romanmissal\/index.shtml<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
