{"id":325,"date":"2010-09-26T17:37:23","date_gmt":"2010-09-26T21:37:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=325"},"modified":"2010-09-26T17:39:35","modified_gmt":"2010-09-26T21:39:35","slug":"our-attitude-in-giving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/our-attitude-in-giving\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Attitude in Giving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week my diocese began its annual appeal known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dor.org\/sd\/appeal.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Catholic Ministries Appeal<\/a>.\u00a0 Obviously, the goal of the appeal is to raise money to pay for the &#8220;work&#8221; of our diocese.\u00a0 However, the appeal is not about money.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about <em>ministry<\/em> and <em>mission<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever we hear about any charitable organization doing an appeal or a campaign our initial response might be what do they want money for now or how much do they want now?<\/p>\n<p>What does the diocese what money for now?\u00a0 That&#8217;s easy!\u00a0 To do what Christ asks of us &#8211; to care for those in need and to proclaim the good news!<\/p>\n<p>How much do they want you to give?\u00a0 However much you are able to.\u00a0 All we ask is that you don&#8217;t make an arbitrary decision or just give the same amount you have given for the last several years.\u00a0 Do what you should with all your decisions &#8211; take it to prayer.\u00a0 But as you think about how much you are able to give, think about your attitude in giving.\u00a0 Often, when we talk about giving to the church, we do it with a sense of an\u00a0<em>obligation to give<\/em>.\u00a0 I prefer to think about it as an <em>opportunity to contribute<\/em>, to contribute to the mission Christ has called us to, to proclaim the good news and to care for those in need (To learn what you are contributing to, read the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholiccourier.com\/cc\/index.cfm\/commentary\/bishops-column\/shining-light-on-diocesan-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bishop&#8217;s column<\/a> on the CMA.) and to give with an <em>attitude of gratitude<\/em> &#8211; gratitude for what God has given us and willingness to share it with others.<\/p>\n<p>Christ is our light.\u00a0 We receive the <em>Light of Christ<\/em> at Baptism.\u00a0 We are called to share the <em>light<\/em>.\u00a0 The theme for this year&#8217;s appeal is <em>Let Your Light Shine<\/em>.\u00a0 Contributing to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dor.org\/sd\/appeal.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Catholic Ministries Appeal<\/a> is just one way to contribute.\u00a0 How is God calling you to be a good steward, contributing your time, talent, and treasure to fulfill our mission?<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
