{"id":307,"date":"2010-09-04T11:10:49","date_gmt":"2010-09-04T15:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=307"},"modified":"2010-09-04T11:17:41","modified_gmt":"2010-09-04T15:17:41","slug":"the-value-of-labor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/the-value-of-labor\/","title":{"rendered":"The Value of Labor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the United States, on Monday, we will be celebrating Labor Day.\u00a0 In celebrating Labor Day, we celebrate the achievements we have made through our work (The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/opa\/aboutdol\/laborday.htm\" target=\"_blank\">history of Labor Day<\/a> goes back over 100 years.).<\/p>\n<p>Some people look at work as a bad thing, something we do only to make money so we can buy the &#8220;stuff&#8221; we need and <em>want.<\/em>\u00a0 Work is not something bad.\u00a0 In fact, in work we can find fulfillment.\u00a0 Work is not something we do just to make money.\u00a0 Work is part of how we use the gifts we have been given to make the world a better place.\u00a0 Even when the work we do <em>seems<\/em> to have nothing to do with God, when we work to make the world a better place, we are doing what God asks of us.\u00a0 From the very beginning God has meant for us to work for in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/genesis\/genesis2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Genesis 2:15 <\/a>we read, &#8220;The Lord God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate, and care for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Church is concerned with the dignity of the human person.\u00a0 So, we are concerned with how people are treated.\u00a0 This includes their working conditions and the adequacy of the pay they receive.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/leo_xiii\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_l-xiii_enc_15051891_rerum-novarum_en.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Rerum Novarum<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>is considered the first encyclical written dedicated to Catholic Social Teaching.\u00a0 It was written by Pope Leo XIII in 1891.\u00a0 Its English title is,\u00a0<em>On the Condition of Labor, <\/em>signifies its focus.\u00a0 The world was changing from an agricultural economy to an industrial economy.\u00a0 So, it\u00a0discusses how labor, business, and government need to interact.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/john_xxiii\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_j-xxiii_enc_11041963_pacem_en.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pacem in Terris<\/a><\/em>, Pope John XXIII speaks of the rights of the worker.\u00a0\u00a0In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/john_paul_ii\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_14091981_laborem-exercens_en.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Laborum Exercens<\/em><\/a>, Pope John Paul II speaks about the dignity of work, the worker, and the rights of labor.\u00a0 In <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.osjspm.org\/economic_justice_for_all.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Economic Justice For All<\/a><\/em>, the U.S. bishops write about issues of the U.S. economy.\u00a0 The Church is very much concerned with &#8220;persons&#8221; so it has much to say about <em>work<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>How do you see the work you do as helping to make the world a better place?<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
