{"id":2976,"date":"2019-09-21T13:52:39","date_gmt":"2019-09-21T17:52:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=2976"},"modified":"2019-09-21T13:52:39","modified_gmt":"2019-09-21T17:52:39","slug":"a-word-on-the-saints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/a-word-on-the-saints\/","title":{"rendered":"A Word on the Saints"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For those who follow <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"St. Luke\u2019s on Facebook (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/St-Luke-the-Evangelist-Livingston-County-203258936485461\/\" target=\"_blank\">St. Luke\u2019s on Facebook<\/a> (the parish where I currently serve), we began posting images or quotes associated with particular saints this summer.\u00a0 We do this to help us better know the saints.\u00a0 This is also part of the reason that led to the series, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/saints1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Our Saints and Intercessors, (opens in a new tab)\">Our Saints and Intercessors<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/saints1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Our Saints and Intercessors, (opens in a new tab)\">,<\/a> that Fr. Jeff is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One might wonder how we choose the saints that are posted on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/St-Luke-the-Evangelist-Livingston-County-203258936485461\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"parish Facebook page (opens in a new tab)\">parish Facebook page<\/a>.\u00a0 The simple answer is that we do not choose which saints are reflected in the posts.\u00a0 We are following the church\u2019s daily calendar.\u00a0 When we post an image or a quote from a particular saint, it is their day on the liturgical calendar.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general terms, we call the day assigned to a particular\nsaint their \u201cfeast day.\u201d&nbsp; However, there\nare different levels of \u201cfeast days.\u201d&nbsp;\nThere are feasts (all of which are obligatory), obligatory memorials,\nand optional memorials.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it is the feast day of a saint, there are special prayers that can be used at Mass for the Collect (opening prayer), Offertory Prayer (prayer over the gifts), and the Prayer After Communion.\u00a0 There can also be special readings associated with a saint\u2019s feast day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With rare exception, when a feast day is celebrated on\nSunday, the saint prayers and readings are NOT used as the Sunday readings and\nprayers take precedence.&nbsp; During the\nweek, when a saint day is a feast, the readings and prayers must be used for\ndaily Mass.&nbsp; When it is an obligatory\nmemorial, the prayers must be used while the readings may or may not\nchange.&nbsp; For optional memorials, it is\nthe discretion of the priest who is presiding at Mass whether or not to use the\nprayers or readings associated with the saints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might wonder what determines whether a saint\u2019s feast day is a feast, obligatory memorial, or an optional memorial.\u00a0 It is <strong><em>not <\/em><\/strong>a matter of how \u201cpowerful\u201d the saint is.\u00a0 Rather, it is based on how well they are known, locally or worldwide.\u00a0 For instance, on the universal calendar, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"October 19th, is an optional memorial for St. Isaac Jogues and his companions, known as the North American martyrs (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.franciscanmedia.org\/saint-isaac-jogues-jean-de-br-eacute-beuf-and-companions\/\" target=\"_blank\">October 19<\/a><sup><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"October 19th, is an optional memorial for St. Isaac Jogues and his companions, known as the North American martyrs (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.franciscanmedia.org\/saint-isaac-jogues-jean-de-br-eacute-beuf-and-companions\/\" target=\"_blank\">th<\/a><\/sup><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"October 19th, is an optional memorial for St. Isaac Jogues and his companions, known as the North American martyrs (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.franciscanmedia.org\/saint-isaac-jogues-jean-de-br-eacute-beuf-and-companions\/\" target=\"_blank\">, is an optional memorial for St. Isaac Jogues and his companions, known as the North American martyrs<\/a>.\u00a0 For us in the United States, since they were martyred between Albany and Canada in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century, their feast day is an obligatory memorial.\u00a0 Our own parish saint, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"St. Luke (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.franciscanmedia.org\/saint-luke\/\" target=\"_blank\">St. Luke<\/a> is a feast as he is <strong><em>known to all<\/em><\/strong> as the writer of the gospel that bears his name and the <em>Acts of the Apostles<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would like to learn more about saints on their feast day, a great resource is <a href=\"http:\/\/saintoftheday.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"saintoftheday.org (opens in a new tab)\">saintoftheday.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\nFr.
