{"id":2723,"date":"2018-12-05T09:13:06","date_gmt":"2018-12-05T14:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=2723"},"modified":"2018-12-05T09:13:06","modified_gmt":"2018-12-05T14:13:06","slug":"rich-food-and-choice-wines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/rich-food-and-choice-wines\/","title":{"rendered":"Rich Food and Choice Wines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/120518.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">today&#8217;s readings (Dec. 5th, Wednesday of the First Week of Advent, Year 1)<\/a>, we hear of the Lord providing for his people.\u00a0 He provides the nourishment <em><strong>we need<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the gospel today we again find Jesus going up on the mountain, a sign of moving closer to God.\u00a0 The people gather around him, including &#8220;<em>the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute,\u00a0and many others<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 He cured them.\u00a0 After that, Jesus recognizes how all those people, numbered &#8220;<em>four thousand men, not counting women and children<\/em>&#8221; in Matthew 15:38, needed food.\u00a0 Jesus knows what our physical bodies need.<\/p>\n<p>So, he fed the whole crowd.\u00a0 The first reading from Isaiah speaks of the Lord providing &#8220;<em>rich food and choice wines<\/em>&#8221; but it was not steak and lobster he provided.\u00a0 It was not a fancy meal he provided.\u00a0 It was simple bread.\u00a0 Why bread?\u00a0 Just as we use water in Baptism as a basic necessity of life, so too is bread seen as a basic staple of life.\u00a0 Jesus provides what <em><strong>we need<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus knows what our physical bodies need.\u00a0 He also knows what our souls need.\u00a0 Both require nourishment.\u00a0 Jesus provides us with greatest meal to nourish us.\u00a0 It truly is &#8220;<em>rich food and choice wines<\/em>&#8221; but it is not steak and lobster.\u00a0 The food is nothing fancier and it&#8217;s probably not your favorite physical food.\u00a0 The wine is not an expensive body of fine wine.\u00a0 For this meal, Jesus starts with unleavened bread that looks not much different than a cracker and a simple bottle of wine, adds grace in the transubstantiation, as well as the sacrifice of Jesus to feed us with the greatest food there is, <em><strong>The Body and Blood of Christ<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
