{"id":2674,"date":"2018-11-04T13:04:21","date_gmt":"2018-11-04T18:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=2674"},"modified":"2018-11-04T13:04:21","modified_gmt":"2018-11-04T18:04:21","slug":"31st-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/31st-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily\/","title":{"rendered":"31st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/110418.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">31<sup>st<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B<\/a><br \/>\nDeuteronomy 6:2-6<br \/>\nPsalm 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51 (2)<br \/>\nHebrews 7:23-28<br \/>\nMark 12:28-34<br \/>\nNovember 4, 2018<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>God is love!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God loves us.\u00a0 We see this in Jesus, \u201c<em>For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life<\/em>\u201d (John 3:16).\u00a0 God\u2019s love for us has no limits.<\/p>\n<p>In return we are called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, mind, and strength.\u00a0 We are called to love God with our <strong><em>whole<\/em><\/strong> being.\u00a0 As part of this we are called to love what God has created.\u00a0 That means loving our neighbor for all people are God\u2019s creation.<\/p>\n<p>God loves us at the moment when we are conceived in our mother\u2019s womb and for eternity.\u00a0 It is our choice to respond in love.\u00a0 This weekend we have who seek God\u2019s love in a new way in their lives.\u00a0 At both our 4:30 and 10:30 Masses we have young children we are baptizing.\u00a0 At our 8:15 Mass we have four people who have begun our RCIA process to receive their sacraments at the Easter Vigil.<\/p>\n<p>At baptism we asked six questions.\u00a0 The first three ask if we \u201creject Satan\u201d and \u201chis empty promises.\u201d\u00a0 Then we are asked if we <strong><em>believe<\/em><\/strong> in God the Father as our creator.\u00a0 Do we <strong><em>believe<\/em><\/strong> in Jesus his Son who was crucified for us?\u00a0 Do we <strong><em>believe<\/em><\/strong> in the Holy Spirit?<\/p>\n<p>When we hear these questions we respond \u201cI do\u201d but how much do you think about what it means to say I do?\u00a0 Are there ways in which we fail to love God with <strong><em>all<\/em><\/strong> our heart, soul, mind, and strength?\u00a0 Do we always love our neighbor?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s face it.\u00a0 It is not easy to love at this level.\u00a0 Sometimes I wonder if we even know what it means to \u201clove\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Is \u201clove\u201d a noun or a verb?<\/p>\n<p>As a noun we can think of the love that God gives us.\u00a0 We can think of the love that we share with each other.<\/p>\n<p>Then, is love just a thing?<\/p>\n<p>No, if we have love, then we are going to love not just in saying we love but to show our love in our actions.\u00a0 In this sense, love is a verb.\u00a0 Love is something we do.<\/p>\n<p>Love means caring about people.\u00a0 We see God\u2019s love in giving his Son Jesus for us.\u00a0 God also loves us in giving us commandments.\u00a0 God does not give us commandments to get us to do things for him.\u00a0 God gives us commandments that are good for us, that will lead us to have a \u201c<em>long life<\/em>\u201d and to \u201c<em>grow and prosper<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>God\u2019s commandments are good for us.\u00a0 Are we willing to listen?\u00a0 Do we strive to follow them, knowing we can trust in God\u2019s perfect love?<\/p>\n<p>The first three of the Ten Commandments point us to know what it means to love God, to have no other gods and to keep the Sabbath holy.\u00a0 The remaining seven Commandments point us to know what it means to love our neighbor.\u00a0 If we love our neighbor, we respect what they have to say.\u00a0 We do not steal from them or look at them as objects of lust.\u00a0 We don\u2019t kill or hurt them.\u00a0 We do not covet their property or family.<\/p>\n<p>God loves us.\u00a0 Knowing this we need let go of trying to be our own saviors in this material world and recognize God as the source of true strength and to make him our rock and fortress knowing that He is our deliverer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>31st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B Deuteronomy 6:2-6 Psalm 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51 (2) Hebrews 7:23-28 Mark 12:28-34 November 4, 2018 God is love!
