{"id":2516,"date":"2018-05-15T09:04:43","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T13:04:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=2516"},"modified":"2018-05-15T09:05:51","modified_gmt":"2018-05-15T13:05:51","slug":"st-isidore-the-patron-saint-of-farmers-and-holiness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/st-isidore-the-patron-saint-of-farmers-and-holiness\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Isidore, the Patron Saint of Farmers, and Holiness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the Memorial of St. Isidore.\u00a0 Actually, it&#8217;s an optional memorial but I chose to use the opening prayer and antiphon for St. Isidore at Mass this morning for three reasons.<\/p>\n<p>First, because he is the patron saint of farmers, in fact he was a farmer himself, and since I like to eat, I consider farmers\u00a0<strong><em>very important<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Farmers don&#8217;t get enough credit.\u00a0 We need food and so we need them.<\/p>\n<p>Second, in the United States he is the patron saint of the National Rural Life Conference.\u00a0 This places him a little higher on the list of memorials for saints.<\/p>\n<p>Third, his wife, Maria de la Cabeza (Torribia) is also canonized as a saint.\u00a0 So they can be a model of holiness in marriage.<\/p>\n<p>St. Isidore was a man devoted to God.\u00a0 He is known as having spent his time plowing in the fields contemplating the glory of God, the same glory that Jesus speaks of in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/051518.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">today&#8217;s gospel<\/a>.\u00a0 I hope we all recognize the presence of God in church at Mass.\u00a0 I hope you pray at home and feel God&#8217;s presence there.\u00a0 How about in the ordinary things of your life?\u00a0 St. Isidore could find God in his work as a farmer.\u00a0 Can you find God in the work you do?<\/p>\n<p>The more we are aware of God&#8217;s presence in the ordinary moments of our lives, the more we can be like Paul in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/051518.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">today&#8217;s first reading<\/a>\u00a0who felt &#8220;<em>compelled by the Spirit<\/em>&#8221; to go to Jerusalem and was willing to go even though he wasn&#8217;t sure what would happen to him there.\u00a0 He was in tune with God and trusted in God.<\/p>\n<p>So, today let us ask for St. Isidore&#8217;s intercession for our farmers to have a good year and we ask St. Isidore&#8217;s intercession to help for each of us to find God in the ordinary events of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
