{"id":246,"date":"2010-06-16T17:28:14","date_gmt":"2010-06-16T21:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=246"},"modified":"2010-06-17T06:56:44","modified_gmt":"2010-06-17T10:56:44","slug":"the-our-father","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/the-our-father\/","title":{"rendered":"The Our Father"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/061710.shtml#gospel\" target=\"_blank\">gospel reading for tomorrow<\/a> (Thursday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/061710.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">6\/17\/10<\/a>) is Matthew&#8217;s telling of Jesus teaching his disciples the prayer we have come to call <em>The Our Father<\/em> or <em>The Lord&#8217;s Prayer<\/em>.\u00a0 We say the words of <em>The Lord&#8217;s Prayer <\/em>often.\u00a0 We say it every time we celebrate Mass.\u00a0 It is said several times when we pray the Rosary.\u00a0 We can say it at any time when we are at a loss as what to say to God.<\/p>\n<p>Note that in each of these cases I said we can &#8220;say&#8221; <em>The Lord&#8217;s Prayer.\u00a0 <\/em>However, it is not enough just to say it.\u00a0 We need to pray it.\u00a0 We need to mean it when we say it.\u00a0 Here are the words and some thoughts to help you think about what it means to you.<\/p>\n<p><em>Our Father who art in heaven<\/em>,<\/p>\n<p>God dwells in heaven.\u00a0 In heaven, we will know the fullness of God&#8217;s presence.\u00a0 What does that mean for you?<\/p>\n<p><em>hallowed be thy name<\/em>,<\/p>\n<p>God&#8217;s name is indeed great.\u00a0 Great because of all that he has done for us.\u00a0 Do we proclaim the good things that God has done for\u00a0\u00a0us, so that his name may be known and hallowed by every single person on Earth?\u00a0 Do we live according to God&#8217;s will to show that God is truly great and hallowed?<\/p>\n<p><em>thy Kingdom come<\/em>,<\/p>\n<p>Jesus came to make God&#8217;s kingdom known in a new way.\u00a0 We will not know the fullness of the kingdom until the Resurrection but we are called to help make the kingdom &#8220;present&#8221; here on Earth.\u00a0 What can you do to help make God&#8217;s kingdom known here on Earth?\u00a0 What can you do to make God&#8217;s love known?\u00a0 What can you do to help make the world a better place in accord with God&#8217;s plan?<\/p>\n<p><em>thy will be done<\/em>,<\/p>\n<p>God knows what is best.\u00a0 If we follow God&#8217;s will we show that we trust and believe in his will.\u00a0 When we try to live our way, we seem to think we know better than God.\u00a0 Do you trust in God enough to do his will rather than your own?\u00a0 Do you seek to make God&#8217;s will your own?<\/p>\n<p><em>on earth as it is in heaven<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Again, only in heaven will we know the fullness on God&#8217;s presence.\u00a0 But the Earth is God&#8217;s creation.\u00a0 What can you do to make our world more like the heavenly kingdom?<\/p>\n<p><em>Give us this day our daily bread;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus gives us the Bread of Heaven in the Eucharist; his body and blood.\u00a0 God gives us whatever grace we need to face the challenges of our lives.\u00a0 What grace do you need?\u00a0 Do you stop to let God help you or do try to do\u00a0it on your own?<\/p>\n<p><em>and forgive us our trespasses<\/em>,<\/p>\n<p>When we sin, we offend God.\u00a0 We need forgiveness.\u00a0 The good news is that Jesus &#8220;is dying&#8221; to forgive us.\u00a0 We just have to ask for it.\u00a0 What do you need forgiveness for?<\/p>\n<p><em>as we forgive those who trespass against us<\/em>;<\/p>\n<p>We cannot have forgiveness unless we are willing to forgive <em>everyone<\/em>\u00a0who has hurt us.\u00a0 Is there someone you need to forgive?<\/p>\n<p><em>and lead us not into temptation<\/em>,<\/p>\n<p>Jesus was tempted in the desert.\u00a0 As the Son of God, he had the strength and wisdom to resist the devil&#8217;s temptations.\u00a0 We can fail in our own attempt to resist temptation.\u00a0 The best way to avoid sin is to keep away from temptation.\u00a0 What temptation do you need to learn to avoid?<\/p>\n<p><em>but deliver us from evil<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus died on the Cross to deliver us from evil.\u00a0 <strong><em>AMEN.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
