{"id":2335,"date":"2017-11-23T10:09:17","date_gmt":"2017-11-23T15:09:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=2335"},"modified":"2017-11-23T10:09:17","modified_gmt":"2017-11-23T15:09:17","slug":"what-do-we-have-to-give-thanks-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/what-do-we-have-to-give-thanks-for\/","title":{"rendered":"What Do We Have to Give Thanks For?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today we celebrate our national holiday of Thanksgiving.\u00a0 While it is a secular holiday in origin, it is a holiday that reminds us to be thankful for what God has given us.\u00a0 In the spirit of giving thanks, our Catholic Church has special readings that can be used today at Mass.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/112317-thanksgiving.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gospel reading\u00a0<\/a>is very fitting.\u00a0 It is the story from Luke 17:11-19 of the ten lepers who go to Jesus and ask him, &#8220;<em>Have pity on us.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 Jesus&#8217; response might seem surprising.\u00a0 He simply tells them, &#8220;<em>Go show yourselves to the priests.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 He does not heal them first.\u00a0 Going to the priests is something lepers would do\u00a0<em>after<\/em> they are healed.\u00a0 Yet, they do as Jesus says.\u00a0 Their going as he says is an act of faith.\u00a0 Their act of faith does not go unnoticed.\u00a0 They are healed.<\/p>\n<p>One of them, &#8220;<em>realizing he had been healed<\/em>,&#8221; returned to Jesus to glorify God and give thanks.\u00a0 What happened to the other nine?\u00a0 We don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 We might suppose they continued on their way to show themselves to the priests as Jesus had directed.\u00a0 Yet, we can&#8217;t help but wonder.\u00a0 They must have realized they had been healed.\u00a0 Why didn&#8217;t they return to Jesus to give thanks.\u00a0 Did they not realize the source of their healing?<\/p>\n<p>With such an obvious healing, it should be easy to realize the need to give thanks to God.\u00a0 What about miracles that aren&#8217;t so obvious?\u00a0 For example, if we are battling cancer and the disease is gone in an instant, then we should realize God&#8217;s hand in it and give thanks.\u00a0 However, if we fight the disease for a long time with medical treatment and are healed gradually, do we give thanks to God for the healing?\u00a0 Do we even thank the medical team?<\/p>\n<p>What else might we be thankful for?\u00a0 Paul wrote to the Corinthians, &#8220;<em>I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 Paul gave thanks to God for giving grace to\u00a0<em><strong>OTHER<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>people.\u00a0 Are we thankful for the blessings we see other people get or are we envious?\u00a0 Are we thankful when\u00a0<em>someone else<\/em> gets a great job or is cured of cancer?\u00a0 Are we thankful when their life is going well or are we jealous?<\/p>\n<p>Again, what else might we be thankful for?\u00a0 How about when we have a difficult week and we are just happy it is over?\u00a0 This is what I am thankful for this Thanksgiving.\u00a0 Last week was a very busy week for me with meetings scheduled with the diocese, parish staff, holy hour, confessions, etc. all scheduled ahead of time.\u00a0 I knew I would be busy.\u00a0 Then to add to it, my great-aunt died and more meetings that had to happen soon came in.\u00a0 By the end of the week I was exhausted, not just physically but emotionally and spiritually too.\u00a0 I was grateful the week was over.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not that there weren&#8217;t good moments.\u00a0 Perhaps the best moment of the week was the holy hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament when I could feel God at work in me.<\/p>\n<p>When I realized the week was over and found some relief, it made realize that while it was busy and not everything went the way I would have liked, I got through the week because God was with me.\u00a0 Some of what happened I would guess wasn&#8217;t what God wanted either but he was present with me through it.\u00a0 For that I am thankful.<\/p>\n<p>What are you thankful for?<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
