{"id":2310,"date":"2017-10-28T08:50:18","date_gmt":"2017-10-28T12:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=2310"},"modified":"2017-10-28T08:50:18","modified_gmt":"2017-10-28T12:50:18","slug":"the-feast-of-saints-simon-and-jude","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/the-feast-of-saints-simon-and-jude\/","title":{"rendered":"The Feast of Saints Simon and Jude"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today (October 28th) we celebrate the Feast of Saints Simon and Jude.\u00a0 In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/102817.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gospel reading<\/a> for this morning&#8217;s Mass, we hear both Saint Simon and Saint Jude named among the twelve that Jesus had chosen to be Apostles.<\/p>\n<p>Simon is identified as a zealot.\u00a0 In those days, there was a particular group of Jews known as zealots who opposed the Roman occupation but if we look at the meaning of the word &#8220;zealot,&#8221; it refers to one with a great enthusiasm for their faith and they desire others to share their enthusiasm.\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t this a great quality in an Apostle?\u00a0 (Actually, it&#8217;s a good quality in all of us.)\u00a0 We don&#8217;t want them to be fanatics but we want them to have a strong desire to go out and share the gospel.\u00a0 Simon himself is thought to have preached in Egypt and Persia after Jesus&#8217; death, Resurrection, and Ascension.\u00a0 St. Jude is thought to have preached in Palestine and Persia.<\/p>\n<p>St. Jude is listed as the first Judas in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/102817.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">today&#8217;s gospel<\/a>.\u00a0 He is known as the patron saint of hopeless causes.\u00a0 Spreading the gospel today might seem like a hopeless cause.\u00a0 St. Jude and the other Apostles might have felt like they faced a hopeless cause when they gathered in the locked room (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+20%3A19-29&amp;version=NABRE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 20:19-29<\/a>) after Jesus&#8217; death.\u00a0 Their messiah had been killed through the actions of the chief priests and the Romans.\u00a0 They might have felt hopeless.\u00a0 In their grief, Jesus appeared to them risen giving them new hope.<\/p>\n<p>In the locked room they might have felt the situation seemed impossible but nothing is impossible for God <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+1%3A37&amp;version=NABRE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Luke 1:37<\/a>, cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+19:26&amp;version=NABRE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 19:26<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+10:27&amp;version=NABRE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 10:27<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+18:27&amp;version=NABRE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 18:27<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
