{"id":2067,"date":"2017-03-13T12:07:55","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T16:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=2067"},"modified":"2017-03-13T12:07:55","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T16:07:55","slug":"judging-the-circumstances","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/judging-the-circumstances\/","title":{"rendered":"Judging the Circumstances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/031317.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Today&#8217;s gospel<\/a>\u00a0begins,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>Jesus said to his disciples:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Stop judging and you will not be judged.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The line &#8220;<em>Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful<\/em>&#8221; was the source of the motto for the Jubilee Year of Mercy that we just concluded in November 2016 on the Solemnity of Christ the King. \u00a0While the Jubilee Year of Mercy has ended, our own need to receive mercy and our call to show mercy to others never ends.<\/p>\n<p>When I think about Jesus&#8217; words &#8220;<em>Stop judging and you will not be judged,<\/em>&#8221; I think about how we might rush to judgment of others when we do not know all the circumstances. \u00a0If we do something wrong, don&#8217;t we want God and others to take the circumstances into account? \u00a0Then we need to realize we must never rush to judgment of others.<\/p>\n<p>As I read today&#8217;s readings, I remembered a visit I had to the emergency room fifteen years ago. \u00a0I was the patient but not a &#8220;terrible&#8221; problem. \u00a0I had cut my left hand and it was just bad enough to need a couple of stitches. \u00a0I waited and waited in the room waiting for the doctor. \u00a0As I waited, I began to wonder how long it would take. \u00a0Yet, I was aware that the ER had three possible heart cases come in and one of them was\u00a0<em>my mother<\/em>. \u00a0So I decided I could be patient waiting because I knew there was more going than just me. \u00a0If I hadn&#8217;t known the circumstances (with my mother as one of the patients), I would have become\u00a0<em><strong>very\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr. Jeff<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, my mother ended up not having heart issues. \u00a0She had COPD with Emphysema and was having a bad spell. \u00a0I was at her house working on stuff when she got bad so I called the ambulance. \u00a0You should have seen the look on the EMT&#8217;s face when he came in the door on a call for &#8220;difficult breathing&#8221; and I was standing there holding a bandage over my wrist. \u00a0I pointed him to my mother, saying I would be fine. \u00a0I just needed someone to bandage me so I could follow the ambulance in my car.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s gospel\u00a0begins, &#8220;Jesus said to his disciples: &#8220;Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. &#8220;Stop judging and you will not be judged.
