{"id":1880,"date":"2016-08-07T11:54:36","date_gmt":"2016-08-07T15:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1880"},"modified":"2016-08-07T11:55:19","modified_gmt":"2016-08-07T15:55:19","slug":"19th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-c-homily-year-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/19th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-c-homily-year-c\/","title":{"rendered":"19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080716.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">19<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time<\/a><br \/>\nWisdom 18:6-9<br \/>\nPsalm 33:1, 12, 18-19, 20-22<br \/>\nHebrews 11:1-2, 8-19<br \/>\nLuke 12:32-48<\/p>\n<p>Last week we saw Jesus\u2019 reaction to the man who asks him to tell his brother to share the inheritance.\u00a0 Jesus wasn\u2019t interested in talking about inheritance.\u00a0 Jesus told the parable of the rich man with a bountiful harvest who kept it for himself.<\/p>\n<p>Last week I talked about this in the context of <em>greed<\/em>.\u00a0 The man was building up his wealth but, while he seemed to enjoy being wealthy, there is one other thing we might consider.<\/p>\n<p>Was the man afraid?\u00a0 Afraid that the coming years might bring a severe drought so he just wants to be prepared (It happened in Egypt)?\u00a0 Today this might come into play with retirement planning.\u00a0 We need to plan for retirement but when is it good planning vs. greed?<\/p>\n<p>Our need for food, water, clothing, and a home are all real.\u00a0 That\u2019s why Jesus tells us to feed the hungry and clothe the naked. There are people who have real reason to fear having their most basic needs meant.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus tells us \u201c<em>Do not be afraid any longer<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 He knows what fears the people have and He wants to help.<\/p>\n<p>While Jesus knows these things are important, they are not the greatest treasure we can have.<\/p>\n<p>The greatest treasure we can have in this world is <em>faith<\/em>.\u00a0 As Hebrews reads, \u201c<em>Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We hope for love.\u00a0 We will know the fullness of God\u2019s love when we make it Heaven but while we can hope to make it to Heaven, we cannot see Heaven.\u00a0 We cannot see God in the same way that we see earthly things.<\/p>\n<p>What Jesus shows us gives us hope of better things to come.\u00a0 Having this hope, we can have the patience to wait for the Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>We see this in Abraham.\u00a0 God promised Abraham an \u201cinheritance\u201d in the Promised Land.\u00a0 Abraham immediately went as commanded even when he didn\u2019t know what would be coming because he trusted God.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, after David, the Israelites waited a thousand years for the new messiah in Jesus.\u00a0 As they waited, many turned away to earthly treasures or false gods.\u00a0 Yet, many others kept the faith in hope.<\/p>\n<p>Having hope can be a challenge.\u00a0 We might suffer severe illness, loss of job or other financial crisis, the injury of a loved one, a devastating divorce.\u00a0 Through it all, Jesus is with us.\u00a0 Jesus may not whisk away our problems but He is with us through it all.\u00a0 Jesus knows what it is like to suffer.<\/p>\n<p>When we suffer, hope can be hard to see.\u00a0 When we don\u2019t get immediate results, we might want to take matters into our own hands.\u00a0 We might wonder why God allows such things.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have all the answers.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes people say when they get to Heaven, they are going to have a lot of questions for God.\u00a0 I wonder if, when we get to Heaven, if we will even care about the answers.\u00a0 We will be with God.\u00a0 What more can we ask for?<\/p>\n<p>What I have said today up to this point could be interpreted as saying that everyone gets into Heaven.\u00a0 That must be our hope but Hell is a real possibility.<\/p>\n<p>To be in Heaven requires us to make choices that are in accord with God\u2019s will.\u00a0 It starts in Baptism and it isn\u2019t easy.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we need the Eucharist.\u00a0 The Eucharist is <strong><em>the Body and Blood of Jesus<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reality is we can fall short. \u00a0We call it sin but even in sin hope is possible, not because we can undo our sin.\u00a0 Rather, hope is still possible because Jesus died so that our sins might be forgiven.\u00a0 We need to be humble enough to admit our sins, to truly do our best to change.<\/p>\n<p>Putting effort in means coming to church.\u00a0 Putting effort in means working to learn more about faith.\u00a0 For children this means our faith formation classes on Sunday.\u00a0 For our youth, it means youth group but it does not end with them.\u00a0 Even as adults we have much to learn.<\/p>\n<p>In the coming months I plan to offer some adult faith enrichment sessions.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t make them, maybe you can listen to some of the CDs we have in back.\u00a0 Maybe you can spend some time reading the Bible.\u00a0 If nothing else, keep coming to Mass because our faith is a treasure worth the effort.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>19th Sunday in Ordinary Time Wisdom 18:6-9 Psalm 33:1, 12, 18-19, 20-22 Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 Luke 12:32-48 Last week we saw Jesus\u2019 reaction to the man who asks him to tell his brother to share the inheritance.\u00a0 Jesus wasn\u2019t interested in talking about inheritance.\u00a0 Jesus told the parable of the rich man with a bountiful &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/19th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-c-homily-year-c\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading &lsquo;19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C &#8211;
