Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/011716.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">2<sup>nd<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C<\/a><br \/>\nIsaiah 62:1-5<br \/>\nPsalm 96:1-2, 2-3, 7-8, 9-10<br \/>\n1 Corinthians 12:4-11<br \/>\nJohn 2:1-11<br \/>\nJanuary 17, 2016<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor Zion\u2019s sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem\u2019s sake I will be not be quiet.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are the words Isaiah speaks to the Israelites as they return home from exile.\u00a0 Isaiah serves as a prophet of the Lord and so his calling is to <em>speak <\/em>God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 He cannot be silent.<\/p>\n<p>Neither should we be silent.\u00a0 Each and every one of us is called to help spread the Kingdom of God.\u00a0 However, we are each called in different ways.\u00a0 We are not all called to be prophets in spoken word like Isaiah.<\/p>\n<p>As Paul wrote to the Corinthians, \u201c<em>There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, &#8230; there are different forms of service, \u2026 there are different workings<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 God has blessed each of us with <em>different <\/em>gifts to use in <em>different<\/em> ways.\u00a0 We only become all we can be when we use our gifts to help others.<\/p>\n<p>This is good stewardship.\u00a0 This is good discipleship.\u00a0 We need to follow Jesus.\u00a0 In our gospel today, Jesus is at a wedding along with his mother, Mary.\u00a0 Mary realizes there is a \u201cbig\u201d problem, they have run short of wine.\u00a0 I say \u201cbig problem\u201d loosely because as one who doesn\u2019t drink, I don\u2019t see running out of wine as a problem but to the wedding guests this would be a problem.<\/p>\n<p>What does Mary do?\u00a0 She goes to Jesus.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because she trusts that Jesus can help.\u00a0 She doesn\u2019t know <em>what <\/em>Jesus will do but she knows he will do the right thing.\u00a0 Her words are simple, \u201c<em>Do whatever he tells you<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Jesus helps.\u00a0 He directs the servers to fill the jars with water and then changes the water into wine.\u00a0 Jesus takes what the servers have done and turns it into something wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>The Holy Spirit gives each of us gifts.\u00a0 We are called to use these gifts not for selfish gain.\u00a0 We are given talents that we can use to help make our church better.\u00a0 When we use these talents, we give of our time.\u00a0 We can also use what we have been given as treasure, money and other material things to help people.\u00a0 We can give of our treasure by taking things that we have that we might no longer need and give them to charity to help someone who doesn\u2019t have enough.<\/p>\n<p>We can also give of our treasure by contributing money.\u00a0 This is not about \u201cpaying our dues.\u201d\u00a0 When we give of our treasure, it is to help our church accomplish the mission that God has given us.<\/p>\n<p>What has Jesus given you and how are you using it as a good steward and faithful disciple?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C Isaiah 62:1-5 Psalm 96:1-2, 2-3, 7-8, 9-10 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 John 2:1-11 January 17, 2016 \u201cFor Zion\u2019s sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem\u2019s sake I will be not be quiet.\u201d These are the words Isaiah speaks to the Israelites as they return home from exile.\u00a0 Isaiah &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/2nd-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-c-homily\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading &lsquo;2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C &#8211;
