{"id":1669,"date":"2015-08-21T09:44:23","date_gmt":"2015-08-21T13:44:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1669"},"modified":"2015-08-21T09:44:23","modified_gmt":"2015-08-21T13:44:23","slug":"husbands-wives-and-subordination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/husbands-wives-and-subordination\/","title":{"rendered":"Husbands, Wives, and Subordination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/082315.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B<\/a>) our second reading is Ephesians 5:21-32. \u00a0The passage speaks of marriage and how it is a symbol of Christ&#8217;s love for the Church. \u00a0This reading is among the suggested readings for weddings but it is seldom, if ever, used.<\/p>\n<p>Why? \u00a0Because of one line in the passage, &#8220;<em>Wives should be <strong>subordinate<\/strong> to their husbands.<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0In today&#8217;s society this is not popular. \u00a0We speak of equality of husband and wife and &#8220;subordinate&#8221; doesn&#8217;t fit with equality. \u00a0If all the passage said was,\u00a0&#8220;<em>Wives should be <strong>subordinate<\/strong> to their husbands<\/em>&#8220;, the objections would be understandable\u00a0<strong>but<\/strong> that is not all the passage says.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, if we look at the line before it says, &#8220;<em>Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0If we see &#8220;subordinate&#8221; as always doing what the other person says, being &#8220;subordinate to one another&#8221; doesn&#8217;t make sense. \u00a0This should tell us that the passage is speaking of something besides &#8220;obedience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are times in a marriage when one person needs to make a decision. \u00a0There should be dialogue whenever possible (realizing there are times when an immediate decision is needed so dialogue may not be possible) but when a decision is made it should always be made in consideration of the spouse&#8217;s needs and desires. \u00a0Here I see a different perspective of &#8220;subordination&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s about being &#8220;subordinate&#8221; to the needs and desires of each other.<\/p>\n<p>The other part of the passage that seems to be forgotten is the verse, &#8220;<em>Husbands, love your wives.<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0Maybe the husband needs to make a decision but it must be made out of love for his wife. \u00a0The same is true for anytime the wife might need to make a decision, it must be made with\u00a0love for her husband.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
