{"id":1660,"date":"2015-08-09T11:55:53","date_gmt":"2015-08-09T15:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1660"},"modified":"2015-08-09T11:55:53","modified_gmt":"2015-08-09T15:55:53","slug":"19th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/19th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily\/","title":{"rendered":"19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080915.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">19<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B<\/a><br \/>\n1 Kings 19:4-8<br \/>\nEphesians 4:30:5-2<br \/>\nJohn 6:41-51<br \/>\nAugust 9, 2015<\/p>\n<p>Elijah is tired and worn out.\u00a0 How many of us have felt the same way at times?<\/p>\n<p>In Elijah\u2019s case he is serving as a prophet of the Lord in a time when people have turned away from God and didn\u2019t want to listen to a true prophet.\u00a0 The people had fallen into worship of the false God Baal.<\/p>\n<p>Elijah had fought against 450 prophets of Baal and, by God\u2019s power, they were defeated.\u00a0 Jezebel the queen was angry at this and sought to have Elijah killed.\u00a0 Elijah heard of this and fled in fear.<\/p>\n<p>He is tired of the persecution he has faced and of living in fear for his life.\u00a0 He comes to a broom tree exhausted and wants to give up.\u00a0 \u201cThis is enough\u201d he says but the Lord has others plans.<\/p>\n<p>The Lord still has work for Elijah to do.\u00a0 He knows Elijah is tired and exhausted.\u00a0 He knows the sacrifices that Elijah has made.\u00a0 He knows how hard Elijah has tried.<\/p>\n<p>Does the Lord let Elijah retire?\u00a0 How about at least a vacation?\u00a0 No!\u00a0 There is still work to be done but the Lord knows if Elijah is to continue as a prophet, he will need strength so the Lord sends an angel with a \u201chearth cake and a jug of water.\u201d\u00a0 Elijah is strengthened and travels forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God.<\/p>\n<p>Again, do we feel exhausted like Elijah?\u00a0 Do we want to quit?\u00a0 The Lord had fed the Israelites in the desert with manna.\u00a0 The Lord fed Elijah with the hearth cake.\u00a0 Jesus fed the multitudes with five barley loaves and two fish.\u00a0 The Lord strengthens us with the Bread of Life.<\/p>\n<p>What Jesus feeds us with is no ordinary bread.\u00a0 What starts as bread and wine is transubstantiated\u00a0into Jesus\u2019 Body and Blood.<\/p>\n<p>Seen as ordinary bread, it feeds us for a few hours at best.\u00a0 Seen as true bread from Heaven, it gives us life so that we might never die.<\/p>\n<p>This can be hard to grasp.\u00a0 It\u2019s a reality that people die.\u00a0 Otherwise, why have I done six funerals in the last four weeks and two more on Monday?<\/p>\n<p>The life we receive from the Eucharist is eternal life that helps us through this world towards the next.\u00a0 It is offered for us each week (in fact each day) as we celebrate Mass.\u00a0 Do we recognize what it is that we receive?\u00a0 Do we cherish it and seek it each week? \u00a0We all share in the mission to spread the gospel.\u00a0 The Eucharist strengthens us to do our part.<\/p>\n<p>It is the Bread of Life that gives eternal life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B 1 Kings 19:4-8 Ephesians 4:30:5-2 John 6:41-51 August 9, 2015 Elijah is tired and worn out.\u00a0 How many of us have felt the same way at times?
