{"id":1658,"date":"2015-08-02T16:01:53","date_gmt":"2015-08-02T20:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1658"},"modified":"2015-08-02T16:01:53","modified_gmt":"2015-08-02T20:01:53","slug":"18th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/18th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily\/","title":{"rendered":"18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080215.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">18<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B<\/a><br \/>\nExodus 16:2-4, 12-15<br \/>\nEphesians 4:17, 20-24<br \/>\nJohn 6:24-35<br \/>\nAugust 2, 2015<\/p>\n<p>The Israelites were grumbling.\u00a0 They were concerned that they could find nothing to eat in the desert.\u00a0 A legitimate concern, but how soon they forgot how they came to the desert.\u00a0 God had set them free from Egypt. Did they think God would abandon them in the desert?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, God heard their cry for food and provided.\u00a0 He sent down bread from Heaven.\u00a0 They had plenty of bread and quail to eat but they were to gather only their <em>daily portion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>God did all this way \u201c<em>so that you may know that I, the Lord, am your God.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 God did this so they would know they could trust Him.<\/p>\n<p>Moving ahead several centuries, last week we heard how Jesus had feed a great multitude of people with just five barley loaves and two fish and there was more left over than they started with.<\/p>\n<p>Now, great crowds are coming to him.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 As Jesus says, \u201c<em>you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 The physical feeding was important but this was more than that.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus wants us know what the true bread from Heaven is.\u00a0 He is.<\/p>\n<p>Is Jesus concerned about our physical hunger?\u00a0 Absolutely, but He is even more concerned about our spiritual hunger.\u00a0 Jesus didn\u2019t just give the people food to eat for one meal.\u00a0 He gave us faith to know that God will always provide.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus tells us, \u201c<em>I am the bread of life<\/em>\u201d and that if we come to Him we will never hunger or thirst.\u00a0 If we see Jesus\u2019 feeding of the 5,000 as only about earthly bread, it would seem impossible that we would never hunger or thirst again.\u00a0 That should lead us to realize Jesus is speaking about something more here.\u00a0 When we come to Jesus our heart and souls will be filled.<\/p>\n<p>For us, we receive the Bread of Life in the form of the Eucharist we will celebrate here today.\u00a0 We each will receive one tiny piece of bread.\u00a0 It\u2019s thin and only 1 \u00bc inches in diameter but it gives us so much.<\/p>\n<p>We might often think more is better, but when it comes to the Eucharist, we don\u2019t need a plate full, just our daily portion.\u00a0 We do need to keep coming back to be renewed in Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Think of the words we pray in the Lord\u2019s Prayer, <em>\u201cgive us this day our <strong>daily<\/strong> bread.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t say give us <em>as much as we want<\/em>.\u00a0 We take what we need for today and trust in God for tomorrow.\u00a0 We need to come each week to receive the Bread of Life to always remain in Jesus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15 Ephesians 4:17, 20-24 John 6:24-35 August 2, 2015 The Israelites were grumbling.\u00a0 They were concerned that they could find nothing to eat in the desert.\u00a0 A legitimate concern, but how soon they forgot how they came to the desert.\u00a0 God had set them free from &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/18th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading &lsquo;18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B &#8211; Homily&rsquo; &raquo;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","enabled":false}}},"categories":[104,82],"tags":[],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/pMTPk-qK","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1658"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1658"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1658\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1659,"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1658\/revisions\/1659"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1658"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1658"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1658"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
