Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/072615.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">17<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B<\/a><br \/>\n2 Kings 4:42-44<br \/>\nEphesians 4:1-6<br \/>\nJohn 6:1-15<br \/>\nJuly 26, 2015<\/p>\n<p>The events of our first reading happen in a time of drought so food was scarce and people were hungry.\u00a0 The man presents twenty barley loaves to Elisha the prophet.\u00a0 Elisha directs him to give it to the people.<\/p>\n<p>There are one hundred people present so the man says \u201c<em>How can I set this before a hundred people<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 Elisha insists and says there will even be some left over and there is.<\/p>\n<p>Impressive task made possible by God\u2019s grace at work through Elisha.\u00a0 It would show the people that God cared and would provide for them.<\/p>\n<p>A few centuries later, Jesus comes to the people.\u00a0 Great crowds were coming to Him because of the signs he had been doing,\u00a0healing people.<\/p>\n<p>As Jesus looks out at the people He sees a need.\u00a0 He knows they are hungry.\u00a0 He also knows how many people are there and what it would take to feed them all.<\/p>\n<p>He turns to ask Philip \u201c<em>Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 Phillip responds by saying that \u201c<em>two hundred days wages\u201d <\/em>would not be enough to get enough food for all them.\u00a0 He sees it as an impossible task.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew, on the other hand, says, \u201c<em>There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what good are these for so many<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 In human terms, you can\u2019t find that many people with five loaves and two fish but it shows hope on the part of Andrew.\u00a0 Could there be something Jesus could do?<\/p>\n<p>Of course Jesus can help.\u00a0 Jesus has them sit down and every single person receives enough to eat and there is some left over.\u00a0 In fact, there is more left over than they started with.<\/p>\n<p>God provides in abundance.<\/p>\n<p>Food is important.\u00a0 If you tell a starving person that God loves them and then leave them to starve, they aren\u2019t likely to believe you but physical food is not all that God offers.\u00a0 In our psalm today we hear \u201c<em>The hand of the Lord feeds us, he answers all our needs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus feeds the five thousand but that was not the end.\u00a0 This passage marks the beginning of what is known as \u201cThe Bread of Life Discourse.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus will go on to speak more about the bread that we truly need.\u00a0 Starting today, we spend five weeks hearing this discourse to help us understand how Jesus is the Bread of Life for us that we receive in the Eucharist.<\/p>\n<p>We will talk more about the Real Presence in the coming weeks but for today I think we would deal to think about today\u2019s psalm verse.\u00a0 Jesus feeds us.\u00a0 What does it mean for Jesus to feed us?\u00a0 Jesus answers all our needs.\u00a0 What do we see as our \u201cneeds\u201d?\u00a0 What type of need comes to mind first?\u00a0 Food?\u00a0 Clothing?\u00a0 How about faith?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B 2 Kings 4:42-44 Ephesians 4:1-6 John 6:1-15 July 26, 2015 The events of our first reading happen in a time of drought so food was scarce and people were hungry.\u00a0 The man presents twenty barley loaves to Elisha the prophet.\u00a0 Elisha directs him to give it to the &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/17th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading &lsquo;17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B &#8211;
