{"id":1643,"date":"2015-07-12T12:11:02","date_gmt":"2015-07-12T16:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1643"},"modified":"2015-07-12T12:12:10","modified_gmt":"2015-07-12T16:12:10","slug":"15th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/15th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily\/","title":{"rendered":"15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/071215.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">15<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B\u00a0<\/a><br \/>\nAmos 7:12-15<br \/>\nEphesians 1:3-14<br \/>\nMark 6:7-13<br \/>\nJuly 12, 2015<\/p>\n<p>They say if you want to avoid controversy don\u2019t talk about religion or politics. We need to talk about our faith but never to ruffle feathers but to speak the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Amos has been speaking about the faith as a prophet.\u00a0 Amos is from the southern king of Judah but he is preaching in the Northern Kingdom of Israel.\u00a0 Both kingdoms are supposed to be of the same faith so one might suppose that Amos should be welcomed in the northern kingdom but he is not.<\/p>\n<p>Amaziah, the priest in charge in the north, tells Amos to go back home to <em>make his living<\/em>.\u00a0 Amaziah tries to send him away because he is saying bad things about the king and people who fail to practice the faith.\u00a0 Amaziah assumes that Amos is like many of the prophets who seek to make a living as a prophet.\u00a0 They might say whatever they think will get them paid the most.<\/p>\n<p>Amos is not a prophet by trade.\u00a0 He tells Amaziah that he used to be a shepherd and would be happy to return to that trade.\u00a0 He is a prophet because the Lord has called him to this.\u00a0 Called by the Lord, he speaks the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Do we?<\/p>\n<p>Jesus sends out the Twelve to share in His ministry.\u00a0 His ministry is to heal and to preach.\u00a0 Jesus does so by travelling from town to town.\u00a0 While the Apostles follow him on His journeys, He does not go with a set itinerary.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t look for luxurious accommodations.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t hold onto money or food.\u00a0 He trusts the Father will take care of Him and He teaches the disciples to do the same.\u00a0 They are to take nothing on the journey.<\/p>\n<p>Actually I think there is something they do take.\u00a0 It\u2019s not food or clothing.\u00a0 What they take on the journey is faith, trust, and grace.<\/p>\n<p>The Apostles were <em>called<\/em> to a very particular role.\u00a0 It was not a job any of them applied for.\u00a0 They were all <em>chosen<\/em> by God.\u00a0 Were they perfect?\u00a0 Nope!<\/p>\n<p>God still chose them to be the Apostles just as God chooses us today.\u00a0 None of us is perfect, myself included.\u00a0 God knows our strengths and weaknesses better than we do.<\/p>\n<p>Yet God still calls us to serve Him.\u00a0 We might feel inadequate.\u00a0 We might not really know what we should do.\u00a0 We need to admit our failings.<\/p>\n<p>There are times when I struggle to do what I preach.\u00a0 When some people see that, their reaction can be \u2018well Father says we need to be warm and welcoming but I see him having a bad day and not always be warm and welcoming.\u00a0 Why should I listen to him?<\/p>\n<p>I do fall short.\u00a0 How do you think I know what people struggle with?\u00a0 It\u2019s because I struggle with some of the same things!<\/p>\n<p>God calls each and every one of us to be a prophet but not all as people with years of theological training.\u00a0 Being a prophet means sharing what our faith means to us.\u00a0 It means acknowledging our own weaknesses to show others how we count on God.<\/p>\n<p>Amos was called to be a prophet.\u00a0 The Twelve were called to be apostles.\u00a0 We are all called to share the faith.\u00a0 One of the best ways to do this is to tell others why we know we need God in our own lives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B\u00a0 Amos 7:12-15 Ephesians 1:3-14 Mark 6:7-13 July 12, 2015 They say if you want to avoid controversy don\u2019t talk about religion or politics.
