On June 26th<\/sup>, the Supreme Court of the United States declared that two people of the same gender have the right to marry in our entire<\/em><\/strong> country.\u00a0 Archbishop Kurtz, President of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishop (USCCB<\/a>) immediately issued a statement describing the court\u2019s decision as \u201ca tragic error.\u201d\u00a0 The court\u2019s decision is a legal decision, not a moral decision.<\/p>\n

Like a lot of people I like to avoid controversy so I haven\u2019t talked about the gay marriage but as I have said before, people may interpret our silence as agreement.\u00a0 So, I feel I need to say something now.\u00a0 I agree with the Church\u2019s teaching that marriage is to be between a man and a woman.\u00a0 This is what the Bible tells us as God\u2019s Word from the very beginning when God created them male and female (Genesis 1:27).\u00a0 It is also seen in nature how male and female complement one another physically (also emotionally and psychologically).<\/p>\n

I could go into an extensive writing on what the Church teaches but instead I will provide some references from the USCCB and the Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em>.\u00a0 Before I do that I want to make two very important points.<\/p>\n

  1. A person is not a sinner simply because they experience same-sex attraction. The sin only comes when one acts out in sexual ways with a member of the same-sex.<\/li>\n
  2. We may all know someone who is homosexual. That is not right or wrong.\u00a0 It is simply a reality.\u00a0 What is the saying?\u00a0 \u2018Hate the sin, love the sinner.\u2019 We need to show love and compassion.\u00a0 Think about the story of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11).\u00a0 The woman was caught in the very act of adultery so there was no question to her guilt.\u00a0 Jesus does not condemn but neither<\/em><\/strong> does He say it is OK.\u00a0 Jesus tells the woman \u201cNeither do I condemn you. Go, [and] from now on do not sin anymore<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
