Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/062815.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">13<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B<\/a><br \/>\nWisdom 1:13-15, 2:23-24<br \/>\n2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15<br \/>\nMark 5:21-43<br \/>\nJune 28, 2015<\/p>\n<p>Jesus heals both a woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years and a twelve year old girl who \u201cdied.\u201d\u00a0 Only the girl died a physical death but the woman\u2019s life was severely altered by the hemorrhaging.<\/p>\n<p>There are the physical aspects of her illness that would have been bad enough alone but because she was hemorrhaging she would have been considered unclean and not allowed to have relations.\u00a0 While she still lived, her life was, in a sense, still taken from her.<\/p>\n<p>She had tried many doctors and spent all her money trying to find a cure.\u00a0 There seemed to be no cure to be had but then she hears about Jesus.\u00a0 In faith, she goes to Him and is healed, her life restored.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, the synagogue official\u2019s daughter is very ill and dies.\u00a0 Or does she?\u00a0 Jesus restores her life.\u00a0 Death may be inevitable but 12 years old is much too soon.<\/p>\n<p>Death is a reality but we hear in our first reading that God created us to be \u201cimperishable.\u201d\u00a0 How can we die and still be imperishable?<\/p>\n<p>We need to look at what \u201cdeath\u201d means.\u00a0 When we think of death, we think of an end.\u00a0 Our bodies have grown tired and weak to the point of death.\u00a0 After death our bodies decay.\u00a0 None of this points to being \u201cimperishable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We are not created only to live in this world.\u00a0 There is eternal life to come in Heaven.\u00a0 It is there that we will live as \u201cimperishable beings\u201d forever.<\/p>\n<p>If we accept that there is eternal life after death in this world, it must change the way we live in the here and now.\u00a0 It must affect our priorities.<\/p>\n<p>We want to enjoy life in this world but to what extent?<\/p>\n<p>We need a home, clothing, and food but to what extent?\u00a0 What is our standard of living?\u00a0 I like to say I live a simple life.\u00a0 When I moved here three years ago this week, I brought everything I needed in two carloads.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a lot and I like it that way.\u00a0 That\u2019s my simple life but recently I wonder how simple my life really is.\u00a0 I have my tech gadgets (cell phone, tablet, and laptop).\u00a0 Is this living simply?\u00a0 I have and need a car but how nice a car?<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t eat fancy food but I do like to eat more than needed.<\/p>\n<p>So maybe I don\u2019t live as simply as I should but I find the simple life freeing.\u00a0 The more we have, the more we need to take care of.\u00a0 In trying to live simply I don\u2019t have so many expenses.\u00a0 I use the \u201cfree money\u201d to help others by giving to the church and other charities.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we might desire to live more simply but it seems too difficult.\u00a0 We think we need to change all at once.\u00a0 Sometimes we can but we can have commitments that we can\u2019t change all at once.\u00a0 We shouldn\u2019t let that stop us from making little changes.<\/p>\n<p>Even the little changes can be freeing and help us open ourselves to God.\u00a0 What\u2019s going on in your life that you would like to let go of to make room for God and eternal life?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B Wisdom 1:13-15, 2:23-24 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15 Mark 5:21-43 June 28, 2015 Jesus heals both a woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years and a twelve year old girl who \u201cdied.\u201d\u00a0 Only the girl died a physical death but the woman\u2019s life was severely altered by &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/13th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-b-homily\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading &lsquo;13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B &#8211;
