{"id":163,"date":"2010-04-01T22:51:19","date_gmt":"2010-04-02T02:51:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=163"},"modified":"2010-04-01T22:54:30","modified_gmt":"2010-04-02T02:54:30","slug":"holy-thursday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/holy-thursday\/","title":{"rendered":"Holy Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/040110b.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">readings for the Mass of the Lord&#8217;s Supper<\/a> celebrated in the evening on Holy Thursday are very appropriate to the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/040110b.shtml#reading1\" target=\"_blank\">first reading (Exodus 12:1-8, 11-14)<\/a>\u00a0recalls the original Passover event when\u00a0God lead the\u00a0Israelites out of Egypt by the hand of Moses.\u00a0 It was the Passover meal that Jesus celebrated at the\u00a0Last Supper.\u00a0 This is no coincidence.\u00a0 The Passover was the central event in the history of the Israelite people, celebrated each year to remember what God did for them as a people.\u00a0 God set them free from the Egyptians.\u00a0\u00a0At the Last Supper, Jesus institutes the Eucharist intimately linked to his sacrifice on the Cross when he sets us free from our sins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/040110b.shtml#reading2\" target=\"_blank\">second reading (1 Corintians 11:23-26)<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0Paul&#8217;s\u00a0telling of how the Eucharist is celebrated in the early church.\u00a0 At the Last Supper Jesus celebrated the first Eucharist.\u00a0 He commanded his disciples to &#8220;Do this is memory of me&#8221; and we have celebrated the Eucharist ever since.\u00a0 Our celebration of the Eucharist is fundamental to what it means to be Catholic.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/040110b.shtml#gospel\" target=\"_blank\">gospel reading (John 13:1-15)<\/a> is the story of the washing of the feet.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Jesus is the Messiah yet he is the one washing the feet of his disciples.\u00a0 He does so to show us what it means to be a &#8220;king.&#8221;\u00a0 Kingship in God&#8217;s eye is not a question of power or wealth.\u00a0 Jesus says he comes not to be served but to serve.\u00a0 In the washing of the feet, Jesus calls us to serve the needs of others.<\/p>\n<p>The washing of the feet can be a very humbling experience for both the person having their foot washed and the priest doing it.\u00a0 It can be humbling for the person having their foot washed because we like to do things for ourselves.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t like to depend on other people.\u00a0 To accept the help of others requires humility.\u00a0 To be the one washing the feet can be a humbling remind that one is not better than other people.\u00a0 We are not to consider ourselves &#8220;above&#8221; such menial tasks.\u00a0 How is your humility?<\/p>\n<p>Remember, Holy Thursday is not a day by itself.\u00a0 It has an importance of its own but it is intimately linked to the events of Good Friday and Easter.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
