{"id":1608,"date":"2015-05-24T12:27:01","date_gmt":"2015-05-24T16:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1608"},"modified":"2015-05-24T12:28:44","modified_gmt":"2015-05-24T16:28:44","slug":"pentecost-year-b-homily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/pentecost-year-b-homily\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentecost, Year B &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/052415.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Pentecost, Year B<\/a><br \/>\nVigil Readings<br \/>\nGenesis 11:1-9<br \/>\nRomans 8:22-27<br \/>\nJohn 7:37-39<\/p>\n<p>Morning<br \/>\nActs of the Apostles 2:1-1<br \/>\n1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13<br \/>\nJohn 20:19-23<br \/>\nMay 24, 2015<\/p>\n<p>On Monday we will celebrate an important national holiday, Memorial Day.\u00a0 This holiday has a local connection in its origins as many credit Waterloo, NY as the first place to celebrate this holiday.\u00a0 It is a day where we honor those who have given their lives in service for our country.<\/p>\n<p>War is not good and we must always strive to settle disputes by peaceful means but when attacked we give thanks for those who have given their lives to protect us.<\/p>\n<p>In our region Memorial Day has come to be unofficial start to the summer season.\u00a0 The days have become warmer and that makes us happy.\u00a0 With the warm weather coming Memorial Day becomes the weekend the day to put out the flower urns at cemeteries on our loved ones graves.\u00a0 We will be celebrating Mass at Calvary Cemetery on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>As we think about our loved ones who have died, we do so knowing the gift of eternal life.\u00a0 Fifty days ago we celebrated Easter Sunday, the day that Jesus rose from the dead, showing us eternal life.\u00a0 Before He could rise, He first died for us on the Cross.\u00a0 As Jesus said, <em>no one has greater love than to lay down one\u2019s lives for one\u2019s friends.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We have been celebrating Easter for fifty days but with our celebration this weekend, we end our Easter season.\u00a0 However, it is not our celebration of Memorial Day that ends our Easter season.<\/p>\n<p>Today we are here to celebrate Pentecost that reveals the beginning of the Church.<\/p>\n<p>We can experience new beginnings throughout our lives.\u00a0 This weekend marks graduation weekend at Cornell.\u00a0 Other colleges, like Ithaca, have already celebrated graduation.\u00a0 Graduation can be a new beginning as the students end one phase of their lives to begin another.<\/p>\n<p>Marriage can be a new beginning.\u00a0 Starting a new or different job.<\/p>\n<p>Pentecost changes our spiritual life as a people.\u00a0 Before Pentecost, people had become divided by their sins.\u00a0 We can think here of the story of the Tower of Babel.
