{"id":1497,"date":"2014-11-27T11:01:49","date_gmt":"2014-11-27T16:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1497"},"modified":"2014-11-27T11:01:49","modified_gmt":"2014-11-27T16:01:49","slug":"a-people-of-thanksgiving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/a-people-of-thanksgiving\/","title":{"rendered":"A People of Thanksgiving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a nation today we celebrate Thanksgiving Day but\u00a0we shouldn&#8217;t be thankful just one day a year. \u00a0Our thanksgiving should be part of the attitude we live our whole life with. \u00a0Our presence in the world should reflect an attitude of gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>As we celebrate this holiday, while it is a not feast day in the Catholic Church, the Church does offer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/112714-thanksgiving.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">readings <\/a>with this holiday in mind. \u00a0Our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/112714-thanksgiving.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">readings <\/a>today open with a passage from the Book of Sirach that speaks of giving praise to God. \u00a0We can ask ourselves why is it that we come to Mass. \u00a0Do we come to get something? \u00a0We do receive grace in hearing the Word of God and celebrating the Eucharist but coming together for Mass should find its center in praising God. \u00a0We praise God because God has blessed us in the past and because He will continue to bless us in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s Gospel is the story from Luke&#8217;s Gospel of the ten lepers who come to Jesus for healing. \u00a0Without first healing them, Jesus sends them to the priests. \u00a0Their willingness to go shows faith. \u00a0The only reason they would go to the priests is to be declared clean\u00a0<em>after<\/em> they are healed but they weren&#8217;t healed\u00a0<em>yet. \u00a0<\/em>They did as Jesus said and on the way they were healed. \u00a0One, realizing he had been healed glorified God and returned to Jesus to give thanks, recognizing Jesus as the source of his healing. \u00a0What happened to the other nine we do not know. \u00a0We can only assume they continued on their way to the priests.<\/p>\n<p>Do we give thanks to God? \u00a0It&#8217;s easy to remember to ask God for help. \u00a0Do we remember to say thank you? \u00a0What are we thankful for? \u00a0For things? \u00a0How about spiritual gifts? \u00a0In today&#8217;s second\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/112714-thanksgiving.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">reading<\/a>\u00a0Paul gives thanks to God for the Corinthian people and for the spiritual gifts God has given them. \u00a0Are we thankful for other people and for what God has given them?<\/p>\n<p>When we live in recognition of God&#8217;s ongoing blessings in our lives, we live with an <a href=\"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/basics\/gratitude.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Attitude of Gratitude<\/i><\/a> that helps us see things in a better way. \u00a0Just last March <a href=\"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1317\" target=\"_blank\">I got a hearing aid<\/a>. \u00a0I could have said I am too young at 44 to need a hearing aid but I didn&#8217;t. \u00a0I&#8217;m just happy to be able to hear better. \u00a0I am thankful that God gave others the gift to develop hearing aids. \u00a0Could God just have healed my hearing? Yes, but this is the way He was chosen to help me and I am thankful.<\/p>\n<p>What are you thankful for?<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
