{"id":145,"date":"2010-03-13T13:12:18","date_gmt":"2010-03-13T18:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=145"},"modified":"2010-03-13T13:35:22","modified_gmt":"2010-03-13T18:35:22","slug":"beauty-or-object-of-pleasure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/beauty-or-object-of-pleasure\/","title":{"rendered":"Beauty or Object of Pleasure?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We continue with our discussion of the Seven Deadly Sins.\u00a0 Today we look at <em>lust.<\/em>\u00a0 <em>Lust<\/em> and <em>love<\/em> are two different things.\u00a0 When we love someone we care about their needs.\u00a0 We do what we can to help them because we understand them to be a &#8220;person&#8221; with a special dignity given by God.\u00a0 We love someone for who they are, not what they look like.<\/p>\n<p>Lust, on the other hand, is largely based on physical traits.\u00a0 In lust, we look at the other person, not as a person, but as an <em>object.\u00a0 <\/em>The object is mainly a means to achieve sexual pleasure as a physical act.\u00a0 We can &#8220;lust&#8221; for a person and still love them.\u00a0 Often, it is some one&#8217;s physical traits that initially attracts us to them.\u00a0 It becomes <em>lust<\/em> when the physical is all we are concerned with.\u00a0\u00a0When we act out\u00a0lust, we are failing to treat the person as a person with dignity who deserves to be loved.<\/p>\n<p>Lust can dominate our actions and lead to sins of adultery and fornication.\u00a0\u00a0Sexual intercourse is meant to be between two people in a loving and committed relationship.\u00a0\u00a0Does lust\u00a0control your actions?\u00a0 Ask yourself, &#8220;when you meet a\u00a0new person (or\u00a0just hanging out with friends) do you\u00a0think about about their physical traits (i.e. how nice a body they have) or do you interact with them on a deeper level of conversation talking about who\u00a0they are and what is\u00a0important to them?<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more important? What&#8217;s on the outside or inside?\u00a0 If you\u00a0only think about the\u00a0&#8220;outside of a person&#8221; then you need to learn to control your lust.\u00a0 When we see a beautiful person, it can be natural to be attracted to them.\u00a0 But we must control our thoughts to focus on the person, not just as an object, but as a child of God.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
