{"id":1437,"date":"2014-08-24T12:09:45","date_gmt":"2014-08-24T16:09:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1437"},"modified":"2014-08-24T12:09:45","modified_gmt":"2014-08-24T16:09:45","slug":"21st-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-a-homily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/21st-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-a-homily\/","title":{"rendered":"21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/082414.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">21<sup>st<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A<\/a><br \/>\nIsaiah 22:19-23<br \/>\nRomans 11:33-36<br \/>\nMatthew 16:13-20<br \/>\nAugust 24, 2014<\/p>\n<p>Eliakim is offered the key to the House of David.\u00a0 Jesus gives Peter the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.\u00a0 What is the significance of the keys?<\/p>\n<p>We are not talking about keys to our home.\u00a0 The key that Eliakim was not literally to the house that David dwelled in.\u00a0 In this sense \u201cthe House of David\u201d refers not to a building but to the Kingdom established through David, and not just an earthly kingdom but a kingdom of faith.<\/p>\n<p>When Jesus gives Peter the keys, it\u2019s not that there is a fence around Heaven with a padlock on it.\u00a0 Peter is given the gift of knowing what it means to be Christian, what it means to say Jesus is the Christ.\u00a0 Jesus makes it clear that Peter\u2019s declaration of Jesus as \u201cthe Christ, the Son of the Living God\u201d is not made through flesh and flood but through divine revelation.<\/p>\n<p>Human knowledge seeks facts but depths and riches of God\u2019s wisdom reach beyond human knowledge.\u00a0 We can\u2019t expect to understand it all but through the gift of faith we can believe.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that human knowledge is bad.\u00a0 We need to learn all the knowledge we can about God.\u00a0 The human knowledge helps us to know God.\u00a0 Human words are essential as we try to express to others but at some point we make a leap of faith.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus asks his disciples \u201cWho do people say the Son of Man is?\u201d\u00a0 The question begins at face value, who do they think Jesus is.\u00a0 They compare him to other people like John the Baptist, Elijah or another prophet.<\/p>\n<p>None of these answers are correct but it shows the people are thinking <em>and talking<\/em> about who Jesus is.\u00a0 To help us grow in our faith we need to talk about who Jesus is to us.\u00a0 We might want to say we don\u2019t know how to talk about it but the only way we will learn is to begin doing.<\/p>\n<p>The disciples have been talking about who Jesus is and it is time to take it to the next level.\u00a0 Jesus next asks them, \u201cBut who you say that I am?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter gives the correct answer, \u201cYou are the Christ, the Son of Living God.\u201d\u00a0 Peter has come to believe but as the story continues next week, he still needs to better understand what it means to say Jesus is the Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>Who is Jesus to you?<\/p>\n<p>Is Jesus someone you ask to fix your problems?<\/p>\n<p>Is Jesus one you turn to for advice?<\/p>\n<p>Is it easier for you to relate to Jesus because he is human and knows what life is like for us?<\/p>\n<p>When Jesus reveals stuff to us that we don\u2019t know, is Jesus someone you trust in?<\/p>\n<p>Jesus died for us on the Cross to show us how much he loves us.\u00a0 Jesus is the example of what it means for us to be people of faith.<\/p>\n<p>How would you describe Jesus?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A Isaiah 22:19-23 Romans 11:33-36 Matthew 16:13-20 August 24, 2014 Eliakim is offered the key to the House of David.\u00a0 Jesus gives Peter the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.\u00a0 What is the significance of the keys?
