{"id":141,"date":"2010-03-11T06:35:29","date_gmt":"2010-03-11T11:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=141"},"modified":"2010-03-11T06:37:13","modified_gmt":"2010-03-11T11:37:13","slug":"public-policy-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/public-policy-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Policy Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, on the second Tuesday of March, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyscatholic.org\" target=\"_blank\">New York State Catholic Conference<\/a> holds Public Policy Day.\u00a0 NYS Catholics are encouraged to come to Albany to advocate for our Catholic Principles.\u00a0 The Conference selects issues to encourage us to speak about to our legislators.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s issues included funding for Catholic Schools, Health Care for the Elderly and Disabled, Prisoner Re-entry programs, and maternity program funding (For a more detailed list check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyscatholic.org\/pages\/news\/show_newsDetails.asp?id=505\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nyscatholic.org\/pages\/news\/show_newsDetails.asp?id=505<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I traveled with a group from Elmira (we also picked up two from Tioga County who visited their own legislators).\u00a0 Our Elmira group including 2 students from <a href=\"http:\/\/schools.dor.org\/hfamilyms\/\" target=\"_blank\">Holy Family Middle School<\/a>and their principal, two parishioners from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stmaryssouthside.org\" target=\"_blank\">St. Mary&#8217;s Southside<\/a>, Kathy Dubel of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs-cc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Catholic Charities<\/a>, and myself.\u00a0 In the morning we met with Assembly Tom O&#8217;Mara.\u00a0 At 11:45 a.m. we joined all the Catholics for a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Dolan of New York and all the bishops of New York.\u00a0 In the afternoon we met with a member of Senator Winner&#8217;s staff (Senator Winner himself was called into a meeting with the Governor&#8217;s office).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two meetings lasted around a half-hour.\u00a0\u00a0Both Assemblyman O&#8217;Mara and Senator Winner&#8217;s staff person were very open in talking with us.\u00a0 Did we change the &#8220;state&#8221; in one-half hour?\u00a0 Not likely.\u00a0 But I still believe it is important that we do this.\u00a0 We need to make sure our voice is heard.\u00a0 Each year thousands of people go to Albany to make their positions known.\u00a0 We need to be sure that our legislators (and governor) know this issues are important enough for us to speak up for.\u00a0 A silent voice is no voice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, not everyone can travel to Albany for a day to advocate for our Catholic values.\u00a0 You can still write your legislators on issues that are important to you.\u00a0 If you live in New York you can join the <a href=\"http:\/\/capwiz.com\/nyscatholicconference\/mlm\/signup\/\" target=\"_blank\">Catholic Advocacy Network<\/a> and they will send out emails to keep you informed about issues before our State Government as they relate to Catholic teaching.\u00a0 (The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\" target=\"_blank\">United States Bishops<\/a>\u00a0have a similar program at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/sdwp\/takeaction100127.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/sdwp\/takeaction100127.shtml<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Remember a silent voice is never heard.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
