{"id":1374,"date":"2014-06-01T13:51:49","date_gmt":"2014-06-01T17:51:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1374"},"modified":"2014-06-01T13:51:49","modified_gmt":"2014-06-01T17:51:49","slug":"7th-sunday-of-easter-year-a-homily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/7th-sunday-of-easter-year-a-homily\/","title":{"rendered":"7th Sunday of Easter, Year A &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/060114-sunday.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">7<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Easter, Year A<br \/>\n<\/a>Acts 1:12-14<br \/>\n1 Peter 4:13-16<br \/>\nJohn 17:1-11a<br \/>\nJune 1, 2014<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday we celebrated the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven where he returns to be seated at the right hand of the Father.\u00a0 Before ascending Jesus told his disciples to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>As they wait for Pentecost, they gather once again in the upper room and devoted themselves to prayer.\u00a0 We might wonder what they prayed for.\u00a0 Most likely at least part of their prayer revolved around the mission that Jesus had given them to go and baptize all nations.\u00a0 What would this mean for them?\u00a0 What lied ahead?<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully they also remembered how Jesus taught them, and teaches us, to pray, the <em>Our Father<\/em>.\u00a0 As they prayed about the mission that Jesus had given them, they must have prayed for God\u2019s will to be done and for the strength, the <em>daily bread<\/em>, they needed to fulfill the mission.<\/p>\n<p>In the gospel today we hear Jesus himself praying.\u00a0 He speaks of how he has glorified the Father.\u00a0 How did he glorify the Father?\u00a0 By doing his will, dying for us on the Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus asks his Father to glorify him.\u00a0 How is Jesus glorified by the Father?\u00a0 Jesus is gloried in the Crucifixion and Resurrection, revealing God\u2019s awesome power at work in him.\u00a0 As Jesus rises and ascends into Heaven, he is glorified by the Father, seated at his right hand.<\/p>\n<p>As Jesus prayed, he prayed for his disciples.\u00a0 I wonder if the disciples prayed for those to whom they would preach and minister.<\/p>\n<p>Right after this prayer, Jesus enters into his Passion where he suffers and dies for us.\u00a0 Jesus would pray that this cup might pass from him, but that not his will but his Father\u2019s be done.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if the disciples prayed that they won\u2019t have to suffer.<\/p>\n<p>Peter actually tells us that we should rejoice when we suffer in the name of Jesus.\u00a0 Now, he doesn\u2019t tell us to rejoice in <em>all <\/em>suffering.\u00a0 Just that suffering that is because of our faith.<\/p>\n<p>Peter goes so far to tell us that we are blessed when we are insulted in Jesus\u2019 name.<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever felt insulted because of what you said about Jesus?\u00a0 Ridiculed?\u00a0 Ignored?\u00a0 What was your reaction?\u00a0 Do you stand up for Jesus or did you run away?\u00a0 Have you stopped talking about Jesus?<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps you have never felt insulted because of Jesus.\u00a0 Why? \u00a0Perhaps you\u2019re so fortunate as to be surrounding by people who believe in Jesus.\u00a0 Or is it because you never talk about Jesus?<\/p>\n<p>Why won\u2019t we talk about Jesus?\u00a0 Are we embarrassed to be known as Catholics?\u00a0 Do we rate avoiding conflict higher than talking about Jesus?<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t easy.\u00a0 Talking about God got Jesus crucified.\u00a0 Most of the Apostles became martyrs because they spoke about Jesus.\u00a0 They did it anyway!<\/p>\n<p>When we talk about Jesus we glorify him by saying he is important.\u00a0 When we say no to sin, we glorify God by saying God\u2019s will is the best way.\u00a0 We glorify God when our words and actions say God\u2019s Will is the proper way.<\/p>\n<p>Suffering is not pleasant or we won\u2019t call it suffering.\u00a0 Yet, it is in suffering that we often show others what we believe.\u00a0 In fact, it is in suffering, that we can find out for ourselves what we really belief.\u00a0 In suffering do we turn to God for strength or do we figure that God must not exist if bad things happen?<\/p>\n<p>Jesus suffered on the Cross so that we might live.\u00a0 Are you willing to suffer for Jesus?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>7th Sunday in Easter, Year A Acts 1:12-14 1 Peter 4:13-16 John 17:1-11a June 1, 2014 On Thursday we celebrated the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven where he returns to be seated at the right hand of the Father.\u00a0 Before ascending Jesus told his disciples to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit.
