{"id":135,"date":"2010-03-04T19:00:44","date_gmt":"2010-03-05T00:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=135"},"modified":"2010-03-04T19:01:54","modified_gmt":"2010-03-05T00:01:54","slug":"gluttony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/gluttony\/","title":{"rendered":"Gluttony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gluttony is defined by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicreference.net\" target=\"_blank\">www.catholicreference.net<\/a> as an &#8220;inordinate desire for the pleasure connected with food or drink.&#8221;\u00a0 Gluttony is eating or drinking too much.\u00a0 Eating too much can lead to obesity, heart attacks, and obesity.\u00a0 Excessive drinking can lead to alcoholism.\u00a0 Even if the drinker is not an alcoholic, the excess drink can still lead to other sins because of loss of reason from intoxication.<\/p>\n<p>Gluttony can be sinful in two ways.\u00a0 First, our bodies are a gift from God and we should take care of them.\u00a0 To willingly eat or drink too much can be a failure to value the gift God has given us.\u00a0 Secondly, gluttony can be a sin because, if we are eating or drinking more than we need, then someone else may not be able to get enough food and drink.\u00a0 In effect, our over-consumption can be &#8220;stealing&#8221; from those in need (You may wish to check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.renewaloffaith.org\/sj\/sjwater.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.renewaloffaith.org\/sj\/sjwater.htm<\/a>\u00a0as it relates to our use of water and other people).<\/p>\n<p>It is not just food and water that we may need to limit our use of.\u00a0 In our American culture we are becoming experts at &#8220;over-consumption&#8221;, meaning we use more than we need of everything.\u00a0 We need to be mindful to not use more than we need.\u00a0 Our natural resources are limited and many are not renewable.\u00a0 Other people in the world today may need those same resources.\u00a0 Likewise, people who live 1,000 years from now will need them too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Global Solidarity<\/em> is a term used today to symbolism our connectedness with other people down the street, on the other side of the world, and those yet to be born.\u00a0 We are free to use what we <em>need<\/em> but not all we <em>want<\/em>.\u00a0 May our Lenten disciple of <em>fasting<\/em> help us to live, not just in Lent but always, in solidarity with our neighbors, recognizing their needs.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
