Recently, I noticed there are things that I haven’t being hearing like the microwave beeping or the toaster popping. I mentioned this to my doctor who sent me for a hearing evaluation. Turns out my right ear is OK but the hearing in\u00a0my left ear was significantly impaired.<\/p>\n

So, this past Thursday I picked up a hearing aid. At 44, I like to think I’m not that old yet but I have to tell you I have been happy to hear better. I knew I wasn’t hearing some things but everything is clearing now. For instance, when I was walking towards someone and they tried to talk to me I would have to tell them to wait till I got closer because I couldn’t understand what they were saying.\u00a0 That is better now.\u00a0 I could hear the musicians and lector better at Mass this weekend.<\/p>\n

Why am I writing about this on a religious blog?\u00a0 First, because I know some people are reluctant to get hearing aids because they don’t want to admit they need help or are getting old (pride). I want to say after just three days, it is worth it.\u00a0 Secondly, as a priest, a lot of my ministry involves talking. Not hearing clearly, or at all, impedes my ministry. I can’t allow that to happen. I want to make sure things like this don’t stand in the way of my ministry.<\/p>\n

Some people avoid getting glasses thinking people will make fun of them or think less of them.\u00a0 I have worn glasses most of my life. It’s normal to me.\u00a0 I’ve only worn a hearing aid for three days but I am happy to have the help it gives me.<\/p>\n

Now, if I can just continue to do better in asking other people for help instead of trying to do so much myself.\u00a0 Since I became\u00a0 a pastor, I have made a lot of progress but there is still room to grow.<\/p>\n
