Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/011914.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">2<sup>nd<\/sup> Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A<\/a><br \/>\nIsaiah 49:3, 5-6<br \/>\n1 Corinthians 1:1-3<br \/>\nJohn 1:29-34<br \/>\nJanuary 19, 2014<\/p>\n<p>Here comes Jesus!\u00a0 One might have expected that as soon as John saw Jesus he might run to Jesus with great joy.\u00a0 That is not John\u2019s first reaction.<\/p>\n<p>John could point Jesus out to the people as the one he told them was coming.\u00a0 He does but it isn\u2019t the first thing John says about Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>John does point out Jesus to the others but not as the one he\u00a0has been\u00a0talking about.\u00a0 John\u2019s first description of Jesus foreshadows Jesus\u2019 Crucifixion, which won\u2019t happen till three years later.\u00a0 John might not understand exactly what it means but as he points out Jesus to the others his first words proclaim Jesus\u2019 very purpose for coming, <i>\u201cBehold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Jesus is our sacrificial lamb who gives up his life freely to take away our sins.\u00a0 This defines who Jesus is for us.<\/p>\n<p>Last Monday I visited our school and one of the students asked me how come Jesus\u2019 had to die for us on the Cross?\u00a0 Couldn\u2019t he have saved another way so he could keep on living?<\/p>\n<p>This question was asked by a fifth grade but it is a point that scholars debate.\u00a0 It is a question without a clear-cut answer.\u00a0 Could God have saved us another way?\u00a0 After all, he is God.\u00a0 It\u2019s a question I don\u2019t have a definitive answer for.<\/p>\n<p>What I do know is that God choose to save us through Jesus\u2019 Crucifixion.\u00a0 Today we again hear about the \u2018suffering servant\u2019 from Isaiah.\u00a0 Isaiah describes the \u2018suffering servant\u2019 as the one God uses to show us his glory.\u00a0 The servant will be made glorious in the sight of the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus totally submits to the Father\u2019s will, giving his life in the Crucifixion and made glorious in the Resurrection but we see the glory in Crucifixion because the image of Jesus on the Cross is an image of God\u2019s love for us.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus fulfills these words and more.\u00a0 Isaiah speaks of the \u2018suffering servant\u2019 as the one who brings <i>\u201clight to the nations\u201d.<\/i>\u00a0 Jesus indeed is the light of the world.<\/p>\n<p>John will go on to say more about Jesus but it all begins with \u201c<i>Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>We use words like this at <i>every<\/i> Mass at Communion.\u00a0 Why every Mass?<\/p>\n<p>I say these words as I hold up the newly consecrated host for all to see and gaze upon.\u00a0 It is Jesus we receive.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t bread or wine.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know how it is changed.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t look any different but we know Jesus said <i>This is my body\u2026 This is my blood<\/i> and so we believe.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot understand the significance of this without uniting it with the Eucharist.\u00a0 In our Catholic faith, we believe that Jesus forever united the celebration of the Eucharist with his Crucifixion so that every time we celebrate the Eucharist, Jesus\u2019 sacrifice on the Cross as <i>the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world<\/i> is made present for us.<\/p>\n<p>John offers testimony to Jesus in his every word and deed for he came into the world to make Jesus known.<\/p>\n<p>What do you do to offer testimony about Jesus?<\/p>\n<p>When we hear \u201ctestimony\u201d we might think of a court room.\u00a0 Our testimony is not given in a court room.\u00a0 Our testimony to our faith comes most dominantly in the way we live our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Words are important but St. Francis taught to proclaim the gospel always, use words only when necessary.<\/p>\n<p>One of the ways our actions profess our faith is how important we see our regular attendance at church.\u00a0 We come to hear God\u2019s word and receive the Eucharist.\u00a0 If we don\u2019t come, what does that say about our belief in the Eucharist?<\/p>\n<p>What do you do to live out our faith?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2nd Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A Isaiah 49:3, 5-6 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 John 1:29-34 January 19, 2014 Here comes Jesus!\u00a0 One might have expected that as soon as John saw Jesus he might run to Jesus with great joy.\u00a0 That is not John\u2019s first reaction.
