Today is Thanksgiving.\u00a0 It’s a national holiday but it is also an appropriate day to celebrate in the church.\u00a0 We are a people of thanksgiving.\u00a0 The word Eucharist<\/em> actually comes from a Greek word that means thanksgiving.\u00a0 Every time we celebrate Mass we give thanks to God.\u00a0 Our prayers at Mass speak of our thanks such the preface to the Eucharistic Prayer<\/p>\n

Priest:\u00a0 The Lord be with you<\/p>\n

People: And with your spirit<\/p>\n

Priest:\u00a0 Lift up your hearts<\/p>\n

People:\u00a0 We lift them up to the Lord<\/p>\n

Priest:\u00a0 Let us give thanks to the Lord our God<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

People:\u00a0 It is right and just<\/p>\n

We have a God who has richly blessed us.\u00a0 Sometimes it is with great miracles that we recognize and give thanks for.\u00a0 Sometimes, the blessings God gives us aren’t so obvious.\u00a0 Sometimes we claim the credit ourselves saying it is because of the hard work we done.\u00a0 Our hard work is important but we must recognize the gifts God has given us to do the hard work.<\/p>\n

We should remember to give thanks for the people we care about.\u00a0 We should give thanks for the food we have, for our homes, for our clothing.<\/p>\n

Today is a holiday to celebrate the things we are thankful for but we can give thanks everyday and live life one day at a time.\u00a0 We rush ahead.\u00a0 People are already becoming consumed by Christmas preparations.\u00a0 If you spent some time this week watching TV, you probably saw numerous commercials for black Friday sales beginning tonight.\u00a0 It starts earlier and earlier.\u00a0 Two weeks ago I saw a Santa already in the mall.<\/p>\n

As a people of thanksgiving and faith, let’s not rush into Christmas consumed by materialism.\u00a0 Remember that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus.\u00a0 There will be countless lines for kids to see Santa.\u00a0 Last year I saw a video by Becky Kelley with the song “Where’s the Line to Jesus?”<\/em> which I found very inspiring.\u00a0 You can check out the song at http:\/\/wheresthelinetoseejesus.com\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Let us give thanks for the gift of Jesus in our lives.<\/p>\n
