{"id":1237,"date":"2013-11-25T11:24:01","date_gmt":"2013-11-25T16:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1237"},"modified":"2013-11-25T11:24:01","modified_gmt":"2013-11-25T16:24:01","slug":"homily-christ-the-king-year-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/homily-christ-the-king-year-c\/","title":{"rendered":"Homily &#8211; Christ the King, Year C"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/112413.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Christ the King, Year C<\/a><br \/>\n2 Samuel 5:1-3<br \/>\nColossians 1:12-20<br \/>\nLuke 23:35-43<br \/>\nNovember 24, 2013<\/p>\n<p>The Israelites realize it is time to make David their king.\u00a0 God had already anointed David as king but the Israelites are just coming to realize the leadership that David has shown.<\/p>\n<p>They realize that even when Saul was still alive and ruled as their king, it was David who lead them against their adversaries.\u00a0 David became known as a great king.\u00a0 Through him God builds the kingdom of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>After David, God promised that He would raise up a new king like David.\u00a0 There were many kings after David but none proved be the expected messiah.<\/p>\n<p>Here comes Jesus.\u00a0 Could He be\u00a0the Messiah?\u00a0 Could He be the king they were waiting for?\u00a0 Many placed great hope in Jesus.\u00a0 If he could just be the one they have been waiting for, then the Romans could be defeated and the kingdom of Israel restored.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Jesus ends up on the Cross.\u00a0 For those waiting for a messiah king this must mean that Jesus wasn\u2019t the one.\u00a0 This could not happen to the messiah.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it did.<\/p>\n<p>On the Cross Jesus was mocked as the king of the Jews.\u00a0 Everyone, while everyone but one, felt he could not be the messiah king.<\/p>\n<p>There was one who believed Jesus was king.\u00a0 It was the second criminal who recognized Jesus\u2019 kingship.\u00a0 This criminal admitted his wrong doing.\u00a0 He could have figured he would not be saved because of his crimes.<\/p>\n<p>He does not.\u00a0 He says \u201c<i>Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.\u201d\u00a0 <\/i>He stands up for Jesus and is the one to recognize Jesus\u2019 kingdom was not of this world.\u00a0 His only words to Jesus are an outreach for the mercy of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Today we celebrate the feast of Christ the King.\u00a0 We call Jesus our king but what does it mean to call Jesus our king?<\/p>\n<p>What does \u201cking\u201d mean to us?<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t use the term \u201cking\u201d in our country but we have leaders and we study kings in history.\u00a0 A king rules over a land.\u00a0 The king is the one in control of the people.\u00a0 A king controls the army to get rid of the enemy.\u00a0 Kings live in rich palaces.<\/p>\n<p>This is the type of king the Israelites were expecting.\u00a0 Jesus wasn\u2019t any of these.\u00a0 Jesus never ruled over a land in this world.\u00a0 Jesus doesn\u2019t control us.\u00a0 Jesus did not lead an army, at least not an earthly of soldiers.\u00a0 Jesus did not live in a palace.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Jesus does rule.\u00a0 Where?\u00a0 In heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus doesn\u2019t control us as He gives us free will.\u00a0 But he teaches us what to do with our free will.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus does not lead an army of soldiers into war but He does lead us in combat against evil.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus didn\u2019t live in a palace.\u00a0 He was born in a manger.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is indeed our king, just not the way we expect as humans.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus invites us to be part of His kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>How do we join?<\/p>\n<p>Through Baptism.<\/p>\n<p>In baptism we receive the gift of the kingdom.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know the kingdom fully until we pass from this world the to the next but we are called to make the kingdom known to others as Jesus makes the kingdom known to us.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus didn\u2019t come to be a king for Himself.\u00a0 He came not to rule but to serve.\u00a0 We make the kingdom known to others as we are anointed priest, prophet, and king according to the example of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>We all share in a common priesthood in being willing to make sacrifices for others.<\/p>\n<p>We are all prophets in that we are called to share God\u2019s word with others.<\/p>\n<p>We are all called to be kings not by ruling others but rather by serving their needs as Jesus served our needs as our king.\u00a0 True kingship is not about what\u2019s in it for me.\u00a0 True kingship is rooted in serving others.\u00a0 Jesus is our king, serving us by saving us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christ the King, Year C 2 Samuel 5:1-3 Colossians 1:12-20 Luke 23:35-43 November 24, 2013 The Israelites realize it is time to make David their king.\u00a0 God had already anointed David as king but the Israelites are just coming to realize the leadership that David has shown.
