{"id":121,"date":"2010-02-25T19:16:15","date_gmt":"2010-02-26T00:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=121"},"modified":"2010-02-25T19:20:11","modified_gmt":"2010-02-26T00:20:11","slug":"anger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/anger\/","title":{"rendered":"Anger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing our discussion on the seven deadly sins, we turn to <em>anger<\/em>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/022610.shtml#gospel\" target=\"_blank\">gospel for tomorrow<\/a> (Friday, February 26, 2010) speaks of angry.\u00a0 Jesus refers to the commandment &#8220;You shall not kill&#8221; and takes it further.\u00a0 Not only should we not kill, we shouldn&#8217;t even be angry with people.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s tough!\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t it natural to get angry sometimes.\u00a0 Even Jesus got angry (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/matthew\/matthew21.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 21:12-17,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/mark\/mark11.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Mark 11:15-18<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/john\/john2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">John 2:13-18<\/a>).\u00a0 If people wrong us, shouldn&#8217;t we be upset?\u00a0 We agree that it is wrong to kill because we are angry.\u00a0 In fact, no physical violence is justified by anger.\u00a0 We should never act out our anger physically but it&#8217;s a natural reaction isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it can be a natural reaction.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t always control the thoughts and emotions that came into our head.\u00a0 We can control what we do with the thoughts and emotions.<\/p>\n<p>Paragraph <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/catechism\/text\/pt3sect2chpt2art5.shtml#2302\" target=\"_blank\">2302<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/catechism\/text\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/a> says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Anger<\/em> is a desire for revenge. &#8220;To desire vengeance in order to do evil to someone who should be punished is illicit,&#8221; but it is praiseworthy to impose restitution &#8220;to correct vices and maintain justice.&#8221;\u00a0If anger reaches the point of a deliberate desire to kill or seriously wound a neighbor, it is gravely against charity; it is a mortal sin. The Lord says, &#8220;Everyone who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Anger becomes a problem when it dictates our actions.\u00a0 When we lose control of our anger, we might act out not just to the person we are angry with but to anyone.\u00a0 When we hold onto anger in our hearts, we shut out love.\u00a0 We can shut out not just from the person we are angry with but any one&#8217;s love.<\/p>\n<p>People like to cite the passage &#8220;an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/leviticus\/leviticus24.htm#v20\" target=\"_blank\">Leviticus 24:20<\/a>) to justify their angry actions.\u00a0 Jesus addresses this in <a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/matthew\/matthew5.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 5:38-42<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;You have heard that it was said, &#8216;An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on (your) right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.\u00a0 If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well.\u00a0\u00a0Should anyone press you into service for one mile,\u00a0go with him for two miles.\u00a0\u00a0Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus tells us to let go of our anger.\u00a0 The greatest commandment is to love God and the second is to love our neighbor.\u00a0 Anger keeps us from loving.\u00a0 Anger can lead us to sin.<\/p>\n<p>To think of it another way, when we sin, does God have a reason to be angry with us?\u00a0 Yes, but we could on God not acting out his anger towards us.\u00a0 We want to be forgiven.\u00a0 We must do the same.\u00a0 It is the Golden Rule &#8220;Do unto whatever you would have them do to you&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/matthew\/matthew7.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 7:12<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>May God help us let go of our anger.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.\u00a0Jeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing our discussion on the seven deadly sins, we turn to anger.\u00a0 The gospel for tomorrow (Friday, February 26, 2010) speaks of angry.\u00a0 Jesus refers to the commandment &#8220;You shall not kill&#8221; and takes it further.\u00a0 Not only should we not kill, we shouldn&#8217;t even be angry with people.
