28th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C &#8211; Gratitude"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/101313.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">28<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time<\/a><br \/>\n2 Kings 5:14-17<br \/>\n2 Timothy 2:8-13<br \/>\nLuke 17:11-19<br \/>\nOctober 13, 2013<\/p>\n<p>Ten lepers, all in need of healing, come to Jesus.\u00a0 They ask for pity.\u00a0 With no other action, Jesus tells them to go to the priests.<\/p>\n<p>They go as they are told which actually takes a great deal of faith.\u00a0 The rules about leprosy said to go to the priests <i>after<\/i> healing and the priest would declare the person clean.<\/p>\n<p>But the ten lepers haven\u2019t been healed and yet they are going as directed.\u00a0 This means they have faith in Jesus.\u00a0 They may not know what is going to happen but they have faith to do what Jesus says.<\/p>\n<p>As they go, demonstrating their faith, they are healed.\u00a0 This is absolutely wonderful.\u00a0 Ten people are healed.\u00a0 What is their response to their healing?\u00a0 We are not told anything about what nine of them did except they did not return to Jesus.\u00a0 Only one recognizes the source of their healing and returns to give Jesus thanks.\u00a0 Only one should gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty easy to remember to ask God for help.\u00a0 We generally aren\u2019t so good about remembering to thank God.\u00a0 We may acknowledge that things have improved but do we see God as the source of the good?<\/p>\n<p>Naaman was healed of his leprosy and wants to give Elisha a gift.\u00a0 But Elisha isn\u2019t the source of the healing.\u00a0 Elisha knows this and refuses the gift.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing wrong in thanking human beings for doing their part but we need to acknowledge God\u2019s hand in it.<\/p>\n<p>Do we even see God\u2019s hand in the good?\u00a0 When things are bad, we ask God for help but do we take the credit ourselves when things turn out good.<\/p>\n<p>Think of it this way.\u00a0 This lady was on her way to a very important meeting and couldn\u2019t find a parking spot because one of the local parking lots was torn up.\u00a0 Not wanting to be late, she offered a prayer to God to help her find a parking place.\u00a0 She promised she would go to church on Sunday if God would help find a parking spot.\u00a0 As soon as she finished her prayer, she found a parking spot.\u00a0 So she told God to \u201cnever mind\u201d because she had found a parking spot herself.<\/p>\n<p>She asked God for help and God responded immediately.\u00a0 But she took the credit herself.<\/p>\n<p>When things turn out good, do we take the credit ourselves, saying it was our hard work and\/or expertise?\u00a0 It\u2019s not that we don\u2019t work hard but do we recognize that we do good because of the gifts God has given us?<\/p>\n<p>Do we acknowledge the gifts God has given us?<\/p>\n<p>Do we thank God with gratitude?<\/p>\n<p>Do we live with an attitude of gratitude?<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we struggle to show gratitude towards people we don\u2019t like.\u00a0 We judge them (never a good thing) for something in the past and are shocked with they do good.<\/p>\n<p>We should not be shocked when God does good things for us.\u00a0 I believe God does good things for us all the time.\u00a0 We just can\u2019t see it because we expect big miracles and miss the little things God does for us.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe we miss the good things that God gives us because we give all the credit to someone else.\u00a0 For instance, say we know someone with a terrible illness.\u00a0 So, we pray for God to help them.\u00a0 Later they are healed.\u00a0 Do we give thanks to God or do we give all the thanks to the medical staff?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that we shouldn\u2019t thank the medical staff.\u00a0 The role they play is important and they must work hard.\u00a0 But do we realize that God has given them the gifts to heal us?<\/p>\n<p>Another example \u2013 when some people get ready to go on a long trip.\u00a0 When starting the trip, they take a moment to say a prayer for safe travel.\u00a0 How many of us remember to thank God when we have safely completed the trip?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s when we see God in the simple events of our lives that we begin to live with a real \u201cattitude of gratitude\u201d and appreciate what God does for us.\u00a0 May we also be grateful to God.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>28th Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 Kings 5:14-17 2 Timothy 2:8-13 Luke 17:11-19 October 13, 2013 Ten lepers, all in need of healing, come to Jesus.\u00a0 They ask for pity.\u00a0 With no other action, Jesus tells them to go to the priests.
