22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/090113.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">22<sup>nd<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time<\/a><br \/>\nSirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29<br \/>\nHebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a<br \/>\nLuke 14:1, 7-14<br \/>\nSeptember 1, 2013<\/p>\n<p>I think we get confused about what humility is.\u00a0 Sometimes humility is interpreted as the opposite of pride.\u00a0 In its sinful meaning, pride means to make ourselves look good (maybe even better than everyone else) and to take all the credit ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>So we interpret humility to mean we never speak about the good things we do.\u00a0 We can be humble and still acknowledge the good that we do, <i>as long as<\/i> we acknowledge we do good because of the help of God and others.\u00a0 In humility we do not think of ourselves as any better than anyone else but neither are we any worse than anyone else.\u00a0 We are all created equal before God.<\/p>\n<p>Some people try to make themselves look better than they are.\u00a0 Here Sirach speaks of those who try to live beyond what is within their means.\u00a0 Sometimes it just seems all we need is a little more money or a little bigger home.\u00a0 Or maybe we think if we just get that promotion at work, then we can make things right.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes a little more does help, thinking of those who live in poverty but how do we go about getting that little bit more?<\/p>\n<p>Do we sell our souls to the devil just trying to get that little bit more?<\/p>\n<p>It can seem simple.\u00a0 I\u2019ve presided at weddings for couples who wait until their 30\u2019s to marry.\u00a0 Some of them say they intentionally waited to \u201csettle down and start a family\u201d till they got their careers established.\u00a0 It makes sense and in some ways is a good thing.\u00a0 But then I wonder does the career end up dominating?\u00a0 We say when we are young, we\u2019ll work the extra hours just long enough to get established, and then scale back.\u00a0 This can be great as long as you are able to scale back but for many the long hours never end.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday we celebrate Labor Day.\u00a0 I think for a lot of people, Labor Day is seen as one of two things.\u00a0 Either it is unofficial end of summer, a chance for one more picnic, or it is just a good reason to take a long weekend.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing wrong with a picnic or a long weekend but Labor Day was not started for either of these.\u00a0 Labor Day was started to recognize the good we do at work and to promote good working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>As we celebrate this Labor Day, what does it mean for you?\u00a0 How do you view work?\u00a0 Does your work fulfill you?\u00a0 Do you think your work is important?\u00a0 Do you help others by what you do?\u00a0 Do you do a good job?<\/p>\n<p>Or is work something you do to make yourself look good?<\/p>\n<p>Is work something you do just to have money to play with?<\/p>\n<p>Some people see \u201cwork\u201d as a bad four-letter word.\u00a0 Work is not a bad thing.\u00a0 We are created to \u201cwork\u201d but not just to work.\u00a0 God gives each of us gifts to help make the world a better place.\u00a0 We can find fulfillment in work.\u00a0 Work is not just our job.\u00a0 Work extends beyond what we do for pay.<\/p>\n<p>What makes you feel fulfilled?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29 Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a Luke 14:1, 7-14 September 1, 2013 I think we get confused about what humility is.\u00a0 Sometimes humility is interpreted as the opposite of pride.\u00a0 In its sinful meaning, pride means to make ourselves look good (maybe even better than everyone else) and to &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/humility-and-work-22nd-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-c-homily\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading &lsquo;Humility and Work &#8211;
