{"id":1163,"date":"2013-08-04T09:54:49","date_gmt":"2013-08-04T13:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1163"},"modified":"2013-08-04T09:54:49","modified_gmt":"2013-08-04T13:54:49","slug":"18th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-homily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/18th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-homily\/","title":{"rendered":"18th Sunday in Ordinary Time &#8211; Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080413.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">18<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C<\/a><br \/>\nEcclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23<br \/>\nColossians 3:1-5, 9-11<br \/>\nLuke 12:13-21<br \/>\nAugust 4, 2013<\/p>\n<p>Qoheleth speaks of vanity and putting too much effort into building up earthly things?\u00a0 What is the point?<\/p>\n<p>A person asks Jesus for help with handling the family inheritance.\u00a0 Jesus isn\u2019t interested in such earthly matters.<\/p>\n<p>The rich man enjoys a wonderful harvest, so large he doesn\u2019t have room to store it all.\u00a0 Yet, it still wants to keep it all for himself.\u00a0 Jesus never begrudges him for store up some.\u00a0 That is what you needed to do.\u00a0 The harvest comes but once a year.\u00a0 We need to store <i>enough<\/i> for the season.<\/p>\n<p>This man received a harvest greater than what is enough.\u00a0 We are called to share our abundance with other people but apparently the thought never crossed this man\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n<p>He might say that he\u2019s saving it for a rainy day.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we might keep \u201cenough\u201d for but presumably the man\u2019s barns were already big enough for \u201cenough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even if he is truly just keeping his abundance for a rainy day, he is thinking only of himself and earthly things.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not following Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Paul speaks of how we have died with Christ.\u00a0 In dying with Christ in Baptism, we are called to realize that the things of this earthly word are not where our priorities should lie.\u00a0 We are to \u201cseek what is above\u201d, meaning godly things.<\/p>\n<p>We need to change from the \u2018old self\u2019 to the \u2018new self\u2019 in Christ.\u00a0 That\u2019s means thinking about more than just ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>It means looking at the world as God sees it.\u00a0 We can be great at compartmentalizing our lives.\u00a0 We think we must keep our work, family, and faith all separate but our faith is meant not to be one part of our lives but rather part of everything we do.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, does our faith become part of our decision making process?\u00a0 Let me offer an example of what might seem to have nothing to do with faith but <i>can<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Probably most people here either own a car now or have in the past.\u00a0 What thoughts entered your mind when you were picking the car out?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe how many passengers it can carry.\u00a0 How about whether to get a 2 door or 4 door with the children?\u00a0 Maybe you carry a lot of building materials and need cargo space?\u00a0 Maybe you need something a handicap person can get in and out of.<\/p>\n<p>These are all important things to think about when buying a car.\u00a0 We buy a car to serve a purpose so we need to make sure it will serve the purpose.<\/p>\n<p>But what are some other reasons we might pick a car?\u00a0 Do we pick a car with a big engine to impress people?\u00a0 Do we buy a luxury car to impress people?\u00a0 Do we buy a big truck to look down on people?\u00a0 Viewed from a faith perspective, none of these are good reasons.\u00a0 In fact, they are sins of pride and maybe gluttony.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cpride\u201d would, of course, be in trying in impress people.\u00a0 Gluttony could be involved in buying more of a car than we need, using too many materials or using too much gas.<\/p>\n<p>Our faith is to be part of our decisions.\u00a0 We need to make our faith part of our whole lives, defining who we are.\u00a0 It\u2019s something we must all do but we do it best when we start young with our children.\u00a0 I\u2019ll throw in a plug here for our parish school, where faith is taught right in the classroom alongside the academic subjects of math, science, English, and social studies.<\/p>\n<p>So how well do you do with integrating faith into your whole life?\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t necessarily mean, for example, talking explicitly about our faith at work but it does mean making our faith part of our own decisions at work.<\/p>\n<p>So again, how are doing at living out our faith?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23 Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11 Luke 12:13-21 August 4, 2013 Qoheleth speaks of vanity and putting too much effort into building up earthly things?\u00a0 What is the point?
