\nThis gospel might beg the question, \u201cSo are you more like Martha or Mary?\u201d<\/p>\n

Some people are \u2018doers\u2019 and \u2018followers.\u2019<\/p>\n

Martha is trying to be a good host.\u00a0 Mary just wants to visit with Jesus.\u00a0 Both have their merits.\u00a0 We certainly need to listen to Jesus but we must also provide for the needs of our guests.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t Jesus feed the 5,000?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s good to reflect on our lives but asking if we are more like Martha or Mary might be making things too black and white.\u00a0 It can also be interrupted to Mary was right and Martha was wrong.\u00a0 Jesus never says what Martha did was wrong, merely that \u201cMary has chosen the better part<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martha was doing exactly what would be expected of her culturally but not just culturally but biblically.\u00a0 Look at Abraham.\u00a0 He sees three strangers coming and immediately provides a great meal with a tender choice steer<\/i>.\u00a0 It was no ordinary meal.<\/p>\n

Jesus tells us to love our neighbor and to help them in their needs.\u00a0 Martha sets out to do this as a good host.<\/p>\n

So where does Martha go wrong?<\/p>\n

Have you ever been to someone\u2019s house for dinner and you hardly see the host because they are busy in the kitchen?\u00a0 I have.\u00a0 On a couple of occasions, I have literally been to people\u2019s houses for dinner and not seen much of the host.<\/p>\n

Now, it can be nice to have a good meal but I\u2019m not into \u201cfancy\u201d food.\u00a0 Given a choice, when I go to someone\u2019s house for dinner and given a choice of hamburgers from the grill and talking with the host or a big fancy meal but not seeing the host, I would choose the hamburgers.<\/p>\n

Now, there can be a middle ground there someplace.\u00a0 It is possible to fix a \u2018complete meal\u2019 without spending hours and hours in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

For me, it\u2019s about the people, not the food.\u00a0 It\u2019s about relationships.<\/p>\n

I think this is what Jesus is saying to Martha.\u00a0 Jesus never says \u201cMartha, you\u2019re doing something wrong.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s more like \u201cMartha, you are missing the point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martha is being a very gracious host in feeding Jesus but she is missing out on something wonderful \u2013 Jesus<\/i>.<\/p>\n

We should all want to spend time with Jesus.\u00a0 Martha has the opportunity to spend time with Jesus face to face but she misses that opportunity.<\/p>\n

Do you make time for other people?\u00a0 Do you make time for Jesus?<\/p>\n

We are all unique individuals but we are not created to live in isolation.\u00a0 How do you view your relationship with other people?\u00a0 Providing for their needs, being a good host is just part of our relationship.<\/p>\n

How about Jesus?\u00a0 Do you make time for Jesus?<\/p>\n

Now, the quick answer to that could be, \u201cOf course, we make time for Jesus.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we are here in church.\u201d\u00a0 Just being here is a start.\u00a0 Are you listening though?\u00a0 How about the rest of the week?<\/p>\n

Do you listen to Jesus throughout the week?\u00a0 Do you actually make your faith part of your whole life?<\/p>\n
