Homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/061613.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">11<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C<\/a><br \/>\n2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13<br \/>\nGalatians 2:16, 19-21<br \/>\nLuke 7:36-8:3<br \/>\nJune 16, 2013<\/p>\n<p>Like all of us, the Jews of Jesus\u2019 time had their \u201crules and customs.\u201d\u00a0 The Pharisees were among the experts on this.<\/p>\n<p>One of these Pharisees invites Jesus to dine with him, perfectly acceptable behavior.\u00a0 Who won\u2019t want to dine with Jesus?<\/p>\n<p>However, there is someone the Pharisee, in accordance with the customs of the time, would not want to die with, a sinner.<\/p>\n<p>That is exactly what happens.\u00a0 Knowing Jesus was there, here comes this sinful woman.\u00a0 Jews didn\u2019t eat with sinners (I guess that means they ate alone a lot).<\/p>\n<p>What does the woman do?\u00a0 She washed Jesus\u2019 feet, kissed them, and anointed them.\u00a0 These were practices that the customs called for the host to tend to.<\/p>\n<p>She never takes a place of prominence.\u00a0 She knows she is a sinner.\u00a0 In washing and kissing Jesus\u2019 feet, the sinful woman takes a place of humility.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone recognizes their own sins.\u00a0 The prophet Nathan had to point out David\u2019s own sin to him.\u00a0 David, who already had his own wife, had relations with the wife of Uriah, and then had Uriah killed to cover up the sin.<\/p>\n<p>Without realizing that Nathan was talking about him, David says the sinner must be struck down.\u00a0 Only when Nathan tells him, it is he who is the sinner does David repent.<\/p>\n<p>God forgave David once he repented.<\/p>\n<p>The Pharisee wanted to get rid of the woman because of her sins.\u00a0 Jesus would have nothing to do with that.\u00a0 Instead, he speaks of forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>The woman showed her faith in what she did for Jesus.\u00a0 The Pharisee showed his own faith when he judged the woman and wanted to throw her out.<\/p>\n<p>The Pharisee did not see his own sin and thus did not repent and thus could not receive forgiveness.\u00a0 The woman admitted her sin and received Jesus\u2019 forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Do you want to throw all the sinners out of church?\u00a0 Should we do it right now?\u00a0 Who would be left?<\/p>\n<p>Who are you like?<\/p>\n<p>Are you like the Pharisee who wants to keep the sinners out and <i>claim<\/i> to follow all the customs even when you don\u2019t?\u00a0 How quick are you to judge?<\/p>\n<p>Are you like Jesus, willing to associate with sinners, willing to <i>forgive <\/i>sinners?<\/p>\n<p>Are you like the woman, a sinner?<\/p>\n<p>When we recognize ourselves as sinners, what do we do?\u00a0 Do we cover it up like David tried to cover up his sin with the wife of Uriah?<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe we try to do good to make up for the bad?\u00a0 We should always try to do good and when we don\u2019t, we need to be willing to make amends for the wrong we have done.<\/p>\n<p>There is a danger here.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t a question of doing <i>more <\/i>good than bad.\u00a0 The Law is meant to guide us as we strive to follow Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>The Law describes the works we must do for salvation but the works do not save us.\u00a0 What does Jesus say to the sinful woman and so many others?\u00a0 \u201cYour faith has saved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faith saves us.\u00a0 Where does that leave our works?\u00a0 Do they matter?<\/p>\n<p>Part of Luther\u2019s theology with the Reformation was to call for \u201cjustification by faith\u201d.\u00a0 He felt the Church was putting the emphasis on works.<\/p>\n<p>That was the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Century.\u00a0 A few hundred years later, just before the start of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century, the Lutherans and Catholics came together in accord on this.\u00a0 We are saved through our faith but if we have faith, we will do the works.\u00a0 The works should never be an attempt to earn our way into Heaven.\u00a0 Heaven is a gift from the Father in faith.\u00a0 Works simply flow from the faith.<\/p>\n<p>Is God upset when we sin?\u00a0 Sure, he is our father and wants to see us do good.\u00a0 Today is Father\u2019s Day.\u00a0 We do things to please our earthly fathers.\u00a0 Let us do the same for our heavenly Father.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>11th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C 2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13 Galatians 2:16, 19-21 Luke 7:36-8:3 June 16, 2013 Like all of us, the Jews of Jesus\u2019 time had their \u201crules and customs.\u201d\u00a0 The Pharisees were among the experts on this.
