{"id":1096,"date":"2013-05-21T08:20:06","date_gmt":"2013-05-21T12:20:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1096"},"modified":"2013-05-21T08:20:06","modified_gmt":"2013-05-21T12:20:06","slug":"trust-and-doing-our-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/trust-and-doing-our-best\/","title":{"rendered":"Trust and Doing Our Best"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/052113.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">gospel reading for today<\/a>,\u00a0Jesus tells his disciples of his coming Passion, how he will be arrested, crucified, and then rise on the third day.\u00a0 The disciples did not offer a response.<\/p>\n<p>This was not the first time Jesus had spoken to them about his Passion.\u00a0 So, one might want to give them the benefit of the doubt and say they have already know about his Passion.\u00a0 However, the next sentence makes it clear that their silence is not because they know of and accept the Passion.\u00a0 The next sentence is clear when it says &#8220;<em>But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Are we afraid to question what we do not understand?\u00a0 We are taught that doubt is a bad thing.\u00a0 I think asking questions can be a good thing if the questions are meant to help us deepen our faith.\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;m talking about &#8220;lack of understanding.&#8221;\u00a0 For a little child, it can be as simple as asking why we genuflect in church.\u00a0 For an adult, it might mean trying to understand what science teaches about evolution and what our faith teaches about creation.<\/p>\n<p>Questions like these help us to follow Jesus.\u00a0 Of course, this doesn&#8217;t mean we are going to get all the answers we seek.\u00a0 Sometimes we do need to simply trust in God.\u00a0 I think asking questions for which there are answers can help us trust God when there does seem to be answers.\u00a0\u00a0If God is &#8216;proven right&#8217;, then when here is no clear answer, we know we can trust in God when there seems to be no answer.<\/p>\n<p>The disciples were afraid to ask the question.\u00a0 What do they end up doing instead?\u00a0 They argue about who is the greatest.\u00a0 That can be described in one word, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=128\" target=\"_blank\">pride<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=128\" target=\"_blank\">Pride<\/a><\/em> is a sin.<\/p>\n<p>How do we know when we are being prideful?\u00a0 In the disciples&#8217; case, they were more concerned about who was the greatest than what Jesus had just said.\u00a0 We can ask ourselves &#8220;Do I want to be the best or do I want to do my best?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If we want to <em>be the best<\/em>, that is pride and a sin.\u00a0 God did not create us to be any better than anyone else.\u00a0 However, we are to do our best, using our gifts to make the world what God calls it to be.\u00a0 Then, when we have done our part, to realize that we do good but that we do good because God makes it possible for us to do good.<\/p>\n<p>We learn by asking questions but then trusting in God when seems to be no answer.\u00a0 Our faith calls us to use <em>Faith and Reason<\/em> together.<\/p>\n<p>Peace,<\/p>\n<p>Fr.
