{"id":1010,"date":"2013-03-09T09:07:12","date_gmt":"2013-03-09T14:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/?p=1010"},"modified":"2013-03-09T09:12:04","modified_gmt":"2013-03-09T14:12:04","slug":"the-role-of-godparent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.renewaloffaith.org\/blog\/the-role-of-godparent\/","title":{"rendered":"The Role of Godparent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recently, the question of who can be a godparent has come to me.\u00a0 Many see it is as an honor to be chosen to be a godparent.\u00a0 It is an honor but it also comes with responsibility.\u00a0 To see it only as an honor could be pride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The glossary of the <a href=\"http:\/\/old.usccb.org\/catechism\/text\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/i><\/a> defines a <a href=\"http:\/\/old.usccb.org\/catechism\/text\/glossary.shtml#g\" target=\"_blank\">godparent<\/a> as \u201cThe sponsor of one who is baptized, who assumes a responsibility to assist the newly baptized-child or adult-on the road to Christian life.\u201d (cf. CCC <a href=\"http:\/\/old.usccb.org\/catechism\/text\/pt2sect2.shtml#art1\" target=\"_blank\">1255<\/a>).\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG1104\/_INDEX.HTM\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Code of Canon Law <\/i><\/a>speaks of the role of sponsor for an adult before baptism as helping them learn about our faith before baptism but also in living our faith throughout their life (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG1104\/__P2Y.HTM\" target=\"_blank\">872<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <i>Rite of Baptism for Children<\/i> calls for the presider to ask the parents:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You have asked to have your child baptized.\u00a0 In doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training him\/her in the practice of the faith.\u00a0 It will be your duty to bring him\/her up to keep God\u2019s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor.\u00a0 Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To which the parents respond, \u201cWe do.\u201d\u00a0 But it is for the godparents to share in this responsibility when the presider asks them:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Are you ready to help the parents of this child in their duty as Christian parents?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To which they are to respond, \u201cWe do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If the proposed godparents feel unable to help the parents raise the child in our faith, they should not accept this role.\u00a0 What might make a person not able to fulfill the role of godparent?\u00a0 <i>The Code of Canon Law<\/i> stipulates in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG1104\/__P2Y.HTM\" target=\"_blank\">canon 874<\/a> that a godparent must<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Be chosen by the parents of the child, or in the case of an adult baptism by the person themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Be at least sixteen years of age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have already received the Sacrament of Confirmation and live a life of faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not be the parent of the one to be baptized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">*Only one godparent is required is required but if there are two, one must be male and one female.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I would like to clarify #3 where it says \u201clive a life of faith.\u201d\u00a0 This means the person should be someone who comes to church on Sunday and follows God\u2019s commandments.\u00a0 None of us are perfect but we are called to do our best.\u00a0 A godparent is to help instill those values in their godchild.\u00a0 If they are not living the faith themselves, how are they supposed to help the child do so?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Church takes the role of godparent seriously.\u00a0 That is why, when the godparents are not known to the pastor, he can request a certificate from the godparents\u2019 parish to say they are suitable godparents.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t meant to be a burden.\u00a0 Being a godparent is not simply an honor, <em><strong>it is a responsibility<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Take it seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Before closing I would just add that the requirements of a sponsor for Confirmation are the same as a godparent for Baptism (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG1104\/__P34.HTM\" target=\"_blank\">Code of Canon Law, 892-893<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Peace,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fr.
